how to correct a behavior

My 18 month has been clenching his teeth and grabbing people firmly or pinching for about a month or 2 now. It definitely looks like an anger behavior. He does it when he is mad a lot and sometimes just because it seems. Any ideas how to get him to stop this? Tia

Re: how to correct a behavior

  • My 12 month old is hitting, biting and grabbing cheeks and clawing with his nails.  It's a huge PITA, and we're doing our best to break him of it.  Everything that we've been reading says to be firm and say "no hitting (or whatever behavior)" every time and grab his hands and hold them down so he can't move for 30 seconds or so.  Then demonstrate the good behavior you want instead, like moving his hand to stroke your cheek gently, and smile and praise.  Also, make sure that you aren't playfully pinching your DH or anything like that, where he might be getting the idea that hitting/pinching is ok (not that I think he's getting it from you, but just in case).

So far?  No bueno.  He's a stubborn and willful kid.    Also, we encouraged him to give hi-fives because it was cute, and I think he might be confused as to why it's ok to hit someone's hand but not their face.

  • DC has been using a book "Hands are not for hitting". There's a board book version for younger kids. It seems to be helping.
