Closet Question

So we ripped out the old bar and shelf that was in the nursery closet before we painted it. We need to figure out how to proceed now. Not sure if I just want to buy one of those closet organizers or have hubby just build a couple of shelves and put up a new bar. I searched on Pinterest and got overwhelmed with all the ideas on there. Anyone want to share what they did with a small closet?? It's about 2 feet by 5 feet. I honestly want to do what will be the quickest solution so I can start putting stuff away. Sometimes DH can be somewhat slow with these projects. Granted, I'm not complaining because I'm glad he's handy and it saves a ton of money. If you bought a shelving unit, where did you get it? Thanks!!

Re: Closet Question

  • We ripped out the old shelf and bar and put in those racks by Rubbermaid. Easy peasy and only coat like $50 and that's three racks across.

  • Our nursery has a small closet too. We ended up going to lowes and getting some closet maid box sets. They were too long for the closet- the wooden shelves and rods, so we cut them down to size. We did 2 drawers and 3 shelves stacked on the left and then a longer shelf and 2 rods off to the right. It really maximizes the small space!
  • I have two bars that go all the way across (baby's clothes are small so I can do two rows) then I also put a shelf all the way across (in between the two bars/eye level) that I put baskets in for things that wouldn't hang and other small items. The closet is already packed and is holding a lot of clothes and baby items.
  • We are not using the closet for clothes at all. All of our clothes are going in the dresser, and we will change out sizes as needed. The closet has 3 hanging sets of shelves that I got from Target/Walmart. They are mesh fabric with a sturdy bottom in each shelf. I put bath towels, lotions, bath soaps, bibs, burp clothes, and other little things that we will need for specific tasks. They have baskets available, too, that can go on the shelves.

The closet is mostly storage. All of the clothes that fit him are in his dresser; everything is organized into tubs in the closet.

  • Thanks for all the suggestions! Goal is to have it done by the end of the weekend. That and have the crib put together, we shall see!! : )
  • We left the original bar and shelf. And added a second bar under the original bar and a shelf under the last bar. Then put cloth baskets on the floor and bottom shelf.
  • I'm getting a Rubbermaid track system from Lowe's, easy to install and you can rearrange it as your LO grows.

  • The closet in the baby's room is long but shallow and only had one bar way up top. Total waste of space. We bought this Rubbermaid closet organizer and just installed it last night. LOVE. Completely worth the $85 we paid for it. In fact, I've already ordered another for the master closet and plan to get one for DS's room too.

  • I would do a shelving system like the ones posted above.

  • We've been re-doing bedrooms and closets in our house (old house, small closets) and went with the Rubbermaid Homefree systems they sell at Lowe's. Really easy and configurable, plus you can buy additional pieces if you need them, like storage drawers.

  • We just finished our closet... We got a Rubbermaid kit on Wayfair that wasn't too bad to put up and has enough shelves / hanging space.

  • We did a shelving system like those have already been mentioned.  Love it because then we can move the shelves around as storage needs change.

  • You got me started on thinking about closet systems because we have to do ours for the nursery as well...  Rubbermaid's website has a really cool closet design tool.
