Lazy Baby Boy or Sleep Patterns???

I am a FTM and am 28w1d today. I am supposed to feel regular fetal movements (10 kicks per hr) but don't always.  I wake up at 6am everyday and don't start feeling him until 7:30am or 8 am.  Last night he didn't move for over an hr so I got up and drank some juice and he finally started moving, but I get worried.  Is this normal sleep patterns or is he lazy or could this be a sign of a bigger problem???

Side note: he is measuring in the 79th percentile as far as growth, he is about 3lbs right now so not sure if he is starting to get cramped and moving less because of his size.

  • I spoke to my doctor about this exact problem.  She said after you eat, you should feel the baby move in about an hour.  At that point, you should have a minimum of five moments within the hour.  If you don't feel the bare minimum, contact  your doctor.  She also suggested eating 4-6 meals a day.  That will give you more points to observe.

  • I don't know about the 10 kicks per hour. I was told at my appointment last week to start my kick counts. She told me to start the counts a half hour after I eat. then I had to tally each time I felt movement. If less than 10 movements in a 2 hour period to drink a full glass of cold water and start the count over again. If I still had less than 10 movements in a 2 hour period Then I needed to go to the Dr office to be put on monitors. Good Luck.
  • Try drinking ice cold water or juice, and laying down on your left side and concentrating really heard on movement.  I find that very often I'm feeling very faint movements when I do that that I wouldn't pick up on during my normal course of business.  Also, its common to feel more "rolling" and "stretching" at this point rather than full on kicks/punches due to the decreasing amount of room.

  • Always check with your dr. But I'm 31 weeks today and I go thru periods of the day that I don't feel him for hrs, then feel him going crazy for long periods on and off. My dr says its because he has less space to move around and is sleeping more often now. I went last week and he is weighing 4 pds and measures 15 in! I get worried as well but it says that as long as he moves within 2 hrs not to worry. Hope all is well!
  • I get all freaked out too, particularly since I have an anterior placenta placement and his movements have always been muted for me. Whenever I bring it up to the MW they just tell me what all the PP have said, drink something super cold or have something sweet and lay on your left side for an hour - I should feel 4-10 movements in that time period. I've noticed at this point that I need to have a hand on my belly too, as that registers the "rolling" movements much better than my belly does.

But because I am also crazy neurotic, I rented a fetal doppler and hearing his heartbeat is always reassuring. DH told me "no" on this several times, so don't tell him! :)

  • LO definitely does not move even once everyhour. You shshould be noticing sleep patterns where they are regularly active at certain times during the day and then inactive at certain times (because they are sleeping...). Now if I went all morning without any movement, I would be a little worried because he is usually active in the morning hours.
  • Thanks for the feedback everyone!

  • Yea, my midwife actually specifically asked me NOT to count kicks to avoid panicking. She said the key is to basically feel the baby moving throughout the day--if you get to noon or 1 PM and realize you haven't really felt baby, have a snack and focus on your belly. You'll almost definitely feel 10 kicks within 10 minutes.

If you're working, you really won't feel kicks a lot during work, because when you're up and moving around, you're kind of rocking baby to sleep (and, if he's awake, you're not paying attention to him unless he really sucker punches your ribs). Don't stress it!!!

You're not going to feel 10 movements EVERY hour, they still sleep a lot. You're supposed to count one hour in the morning and one in the evening.
I was gonna say, if you are supposed to feel it every hour, I am all sorts of screwed.

  • Also, my OB/MFM have never told me a specific amount of kicks to expect. They just ask if I feel some movement every day.
