Going off the pill symptoms?

This was officially my last package of birth control pills! I am due to get my period on Wednesday so then a few days after that I will start trying to get my cycle back on track. I have been on the pill for a few years now and I have been researching what happens to your body when you get off of it. I am worried that I will be a hormonal and emotional mess! Any experiences with this? The pill that I was on was Sprintec.

Re: Going off the pill symptoms?

  • When I stopped taking mine I didn't notice any symptoms. My periods stayed regular and I didn't have PMS anymore than when I was on the pill. I would assume every woman is different though. The pill never gave me any side effects either besides taking away my cramps.

Oh wow! It's very rare to find that :) Are you Jewish?
  • When I took my last pill in January I had worse PMS symptoms of sore nipples, nausea, cramping, bloating and then spotted two days and started my period on day 33. I also had a few more pimples than usual. The symptoms weren't as bad this month, but it hasn't been 30 days yet either. If anything emotionally my sex drive increased and I've been a happier person.

When I was off NuvaRing for two cycles, these were things I experienced:
    Gained 8 lbs
    My vomit-inducing cramps returned
    My libido came back
  • My cycle went from 28 days to 45+. Pms symptoms were out of control--lots of "morning sickness", sore nipples/breasts, etc.

  • I don't mean anything by getting my cycle back on track, I meant that my body would be getting itself on track. I'm not doing anything to help it. I worded that statement weird...sorry!
  • Before the pill I had 40-45 day cycles... The pill made me on a 30 day cycle.

Samesies for me...and I was on the pill from ages 18-30 without a break.

I am not. When I was 16 I worked in a retirement home (majority Jewish residents) and they always asked me that too! I never knew it was a Yiddish name. My mom heard it on a soap opera and loved it.

I went off the pill in December, and for me it's been a little up and down. In January I was happy, less appetite, slept well, and had an increased libido. Through February I was cranky, full of acne, and had zero libido.

Upside - my cycles have stayed pretty regular. Not clock work like while on BC but still pretty close. Hoping my detox levels off and my mood and skin stabilize soon.

  • I was on birth control for 3 years too. Before I had my 3 year old, I think I was on birth control about 2 years, and don't remember any major problems. This time though, I notice that my PMS is a lot worse. I have PMS symptoms for about a week before I actually start, and I am not very fun to be around. I am VERY hormonal. I went off birth control in November.
  • Glad someone posted this! This is my last week on the pill, saturday being my last day (I'm just stopping and not taking the inactive week). I've been on BC since I was 16 now 25 so we shall see how this goes. I did stop when I was 18-19 and didn't really experience anything different. But since then I was on depo and then 2 years ago, after I got engaged, I switched back to the pill but a different one...guess we shall see soon!
  • I was on hormonal BC from ages 19-30.

I've been off just a few months now and the three biggest symptoms I had were cramps, sore breasts, and acne.

Obviously, BC kept my cycle at 28 days, and since I've been off, my cycle has been 26-27 days, so not much of a change there.  My cycle was pretty close to that before BC, so I haven't had to deal with long cycles like other people.

Also, my first cycle off of BC, I ovulated on CD 14, the next cycle CD 13, etc., so I seemed to bounce back quickly after BC.

  • So many Shaina's :)

  • Terrible acne, gained 11 lbs, bitch...so much so that I pissed myself off sometimes. Also had about 2 weeks of nausea but it wasn't too too bad. I was on Marvalon.
  • This is my first month off, and I've got full/heavy breasts, am emotional and nauseous. This has been within the last week, so I have another week to go before I can POAS or expect AF.
  • I was on ortho tricylcen-lo for about 5 years. I've been off it for awhile now (at least 4 years).

In the first few months off BC I had a series of dizzy spells. Just out of nowhere, while showering or teaching I'd have to grab onto something because I was about to fall over. Very unpleasant.

Long-term effects of coming off include much worse cramping, and increased (or, restored) libido. BCP destroyed my sex drive while I was on it. I'll never go back on.
  • I was on Marvelon for like 10 years. I went off it for a few months last year and had terrible acne. This time (went off in September) i haven't really noticed much. My PMS is different, some months i am a ball of tears and emotions, some months i have no PMS at all. But i have noticed my emotions have been more erratic lately (taking Vitex to naturally adjust my hormones). Honestly i dont know why i was on BC for so long, i should have just charted like i do now. I dont really see myself going back on BC ever again. I have been NTNP for 6 months and nothing. Its not difficult for me to miss my FW each month.
  • Terrible cramps and lots of pimples for me.

-------------------------------------- @mkrk227 Im considering going off Depo and going back onto the pill. What was your experience and how long did you have to wait for your period? After my first shot in August 2012 I spotted and stopped having a period in October 2012. Im getting my next shot on the 18th and I know will will stop all together on my 2 year mark. Just curious on side effects.

@AudeSapere89 It was the second month that I started getting a period again, however it was still light and not for a full week either-I usually spotted the second day in and then had a period the last three days. As for other side effects? I noticed my libido came back full swing! I never really gained or lost weight and no change in acne or anything for me.

Sorry it took so long to respond, I was on vacation.

  • I've been off mine for 2 months and the only changes for me were my acne coming back (NOT COOL~!!!!!) and increased sex drive.  I'd been expecting the acne to return and am now taking an herbal supplement called Herpanacine to control it (it's safe for pregnant women).

  • It seems like everyone experienced an increased sex drive... I have to say that i did, too!  I never knew how much worse it was when I was on the pill, but now being off of it, I have a much higher sex drive!
  • I was on Sprintec too! For a year and some change. I was curious if I would have symptoms too, but I have had ZERO symptoms. Hoping my ovulation comes back right away :)
