Questions for those of you who have undergone a D & C?

I am 7 weeks postpartum today and I am still bleeding pretty heavily. I went to my 6 week postpartum appointment on Friday and I was given an endometrial biopsy due to my continued bleeding and the doctor inserted Mirena for birth control. As a result of my heavy bleeding, the Mirena expelled itself Friday night. I going back to the doctor tomorrow to discuss the game plan as I continue to bleed fairly heavily (though not enough to signify a postpartum hemorrhage.) Apparently, the biopsy will detect whether I what I am experiencing is just continued bleeding due to a period and crazy hormonal fluctuations or whether I have a piece of retained placenta that needs to be removed via D&C. The doctor told me on the phone today that she strongly suspects it is the latter.

Has anybody been through the D&C procedure? I have been told it is routine, but I am curious to hear what your experiences were? Are there any additional questions you think I should be asking the doctor? I want tomorrow's meeting to be productive and informative. Please note, I am not looking for medical advice and I working with my physician to come to a successful resolution of this problem- just your experiences and input.

  • No personal experience. My mom had to have one a few years ago for a benign growth and heavy bleeding. She thought she was going through the change (she was) and it was all normal. She had been suffering for months! Anyway, she said it was not as bad as she expected. She rested that day at home and was out shopping the next day. Sorry you are dealing with this :-(.

  • I had one as an emergency due to a blighted ovum. It was abroad and they would not let me get onto a flight due to risk of sudden miscarriage. Anyways, I was under general anesthesia so did not feel a thing- no pain, was discharged in 2 hours. I believe she used a vacuum suction and something to scrape off the contents i.e. placenta that had begun to form. Bled mildly for about 2 weeks after that and had mild contractions. The Dr gave me something to help the uterus contract and some pain meds. I got my period back again in about 6 weeks. I conceived again in 4 months.
  • Thanks guys. It sounds like it isn't a big deal. I heard general anesthesia and I freaked out a little, but sounds like I am overreacting. I just didn't expect to have to go through any sort of procedure following birth. Oh well, I'm glad that I have an obgyn that I trust and that I live in a time and place where I can get any possible retained placenta removed rather than risk infection.
  • I have had 2 one specifically to remove plaventa. It was pretty simple, I was put to sleep, taken to or then woken up after it was over.
I had some cramping, like a period. I also had so pains from trapped air.
Just rock on all 4's to get that out.

Mine was no big deal physically. It was under general anesthesia. I was in and out in a few hours, had no pain, and bled for maybe a week. We went to the grocery store on the way home. I had retained tissue that caused prolonged bleeding after my first baby. Sorry you're dealing with this!

  • I had one.  I was under general anesthesia for it.  I had to have my husband drive me home after.  I had some bleeding for a day or two but then felt fine.
  • Well, at the very least, it sounds like I will have an excuse to put off exercise for a little longer.  :P Not to make light of the situation, but a couple of more weeks without having to exercise is definitely a silver lining
