California ... The Big One (NBR)

Friday we had a 5.1 earthquake and we are still getting tons of aftershocks. Now the news is saying that we are going to have "The Big One" and it's not a matter of "if", but "when" and it will have the potential to kill thousands. Hey! Thanks, news. Great way to start my Monday.

I know a few of you ladies have mentioned that you also live in Cali. Did you feel the earthquake on Friday or any of the aftershocks? @golfergirl08‌ -I know you live closer to me
@adinashoshana‌ - You live closer to where it happened, right? I have been thinking about you this weekend. Everything okay?

Probably not worthy if its own thread, but wanted to check in and see how you guys are. Should have done it sooner. ;)

  • Nothing says happy Monday like being told you're going to die in the Big One. Stay safe, ladies!

  • That was exactly my thought. The news sucks, and I'm no better for sharing it on here. ;)
  • Ugh. Stay safe ladies.
  • Earthquakes suck. No matter how big or small. I've lived in Southern California since I was 7yo and I've slept through nearly every earthquake we've had. But now that I'm older (with children) it's scary! Terrifying, actually. I was born in Knoxville, Tn and I've been in quite a few tornadoes too. I don't know which is worse.

I remember my dad telling me that he was in the huge LA earthquake years and years ago and it scared him so much that he ran out of his house in his underwear and nothing else. Funny because my dad is a Marine and he is Front Line Infantry in combat. You'd think the reaction would have been different. Ha! And my Mom has (more than once) slept through earthquakes and woken up in the other side of the room. We used to have hardwood floors and her bed was on wheels, so the earthquake would rattle her around the room and she would wake up on the other side.

    F this ish!
  • @adinashoshana‌ Glad you guys are okay! You're the first person I thought of when I heard about the areas it was/is hitting the hardest. I think Home Depot or Lowe's actually sells emergency earthquake kits. Wal-Mart might too. Could be something to look into to at least get ideas?
  • @adinashoshana‌ I've only ever prepped for a power outage... After the power went off. Ha! Is that even possible? It was the huge blackout that we had 2+ years ago and they were saying that we would run out of clean water in the faucets so we filled up our bathtub, and a few pitchers for drinking. Also got ice at the store for perishables in the fridge and they were charging $5 per bag! It was a madhouse. Damn, now I feel the need to prepare for earthquake crap too. If you find something good then let me know. I'm not great at this whole preparing thing. :(
  • Glad everyone is safe. Earthquakes are always scary and a wake up call.

I lived in Ben Lomond for the Loma Prieta quake in 1989. While the quake was scary, it was the lack of services afterward. It took days for anyone from 'outside' to get to us because of the roads.

They say be prepared for 3 days. After that, we always had enough for us and guests for 2 weeks. Depending where you are, also take into account your environment. We always had enough gas for chainsaws, generators, cars, ect just in case because we lived in the redwoods.

Thankfully the San Andreas hasn't has anything major to use that level of preparedness for my parents.

  • I'm in Encinitas (north county San Diego) and didn't feel it. San Diego is not directly on a fault like San Francisco and LA are. Our realtor made fun of us for buying earthquake insurance for our house :)

  • I'm born & raised in L.A. in Redondo Beach. I love where I live, but dealing with earthquakes is common. Although I've experienced many, I absolutely hate them. The Northridge quake 20 yrs ago definitely was the worst & scariest one. I was in high school at the time & thought the house was going to collapse.

The big quake over the weekend was the biggest one we've had in a while. And of course I was on the toilet when it happened. How embarrassing if I was found like that. My kids didn't notice the quakes.

We've had so many quakes and after shocks these last 2 weeks that I'm waiting for the BIG one to hit & for all hell to break loose. Just kidding ! :)
  • San Diego here as well.  I've lived here my whole life so I'm familiar with all the major EQs we've had.  (Although I didn't feel the one on Easter a few years ago, I was driving at the time.)

@L12541 We do have a couple fault lines here in SD County.  The most significant is the Rose Canyon fault which is still active, although it hasn't produced a quake in a very long time.

Interesting, thanks! Still sounds like it's not as much of a concern as major faults in other areas.

  • I'm just north of San Diego in Oceanside and we totally felt the one on Friday. My husband is a total planner so we have food water and an earth quake kit ready to go if the big one hits!

And the one on Easter a few years ago was crazy. My DD was crawling at the time and she looked up at me like WTF just happened??
I hope to create a real siggy but first I need some sleep!

@inluv4life2‌ We were visiting my Mom in San Marcos and we felt it too. My brothers were jumping around my moms house with DS1 and playing so we first thought it was them rattling everything. Nope. Weird how some of us felt it, and others didn't. We live in East County (Santee) and I'm not sure if anyone was able to feel it here. We came home and nothing was out of place so who knows.

    Edited: because worded silly
  • I live in Vancouver and we've been told forever that we should expect a massive one. Here's a tip though, don't tell your 5 year old grand daughter all about it. I've spent my whole life being terrified of it.

  • @adinashoshana‌ I was thinking the same thing!! :D

@MissDemeanor‌ My Grandma did the same thing to me, but it was about bring in an airplane crash. As we were taking off. On the first airplane I'd ever been on. Thanks, Grandma. She is also the reason my mother is terrified to drive. Wtf is up with the olds? Well, at least mine.
  • Where was this one centered? My mom lives in Bakersfield and didn't say anything about it.
  • @magentawarped La Habra. You can look at the official earthquake site for future references. It's pretty interesting. :)

here is the link to the main page https://www.usgs.gov/

here is the link to the earthquake section https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/map/ (or just click on "Earthquakes" in the "Real Time" box on the left. Not sure how it looks if you're mobile though.
