Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Milk before bed?

My LO is just turned a year, and we are transitioned 100% from bottles and are onto straw cups of milk.   She has milk with meals, and occasionally as a mid-afternoon snack.  Our current bedtime routine is books, bath, milk, brush teeth then bed.  She is wiped by the end of all of this and sleeps well.  When at her 12 month well-child check, our pediatrician suggested switching the routine to milk before the bath; she didn't seem like it was a big deal, but suggested it would be a good idea.  The only problem with that is she has dinner around 5::30 and bath is just over 1 hour later.  My question is when did you drop that night time bottle of milk?  Or do you still do it right before bed? TIA

Re: Milk before bed?

  • Thank you for asking this question, I'm also interested to hear responses. LO is 20 months and we just weaned from bed time breastfeeding. We do his bath then I give him cow's milk and brush his teeth, then my h reads him a few stories and puts him to bed. Not sure if that is typical, curious to hear what others are doing!

  • As PP said, right about 1 I stopped nursing before bed and DH took over the evening routine.  With that being said, DS now gets milk with dinner (between 5-6).  If he finishes it at dinner, that's it for the evening.  If not, he can have it until we start his bedtime routine.  Bath around 6:30, pjs, brush teeth, read a book, bedtime.  No milk involved or needed.
  • My DS is 18M and he still gets a bottle of whole milk about an hour before bed. He doesn't drink much milk in zippy and I want to make sure he is getting milk. I just don't use it as a tool to put him to sleep anymore and I always brush his teeth before bed too.

  • My DD is almost 2 and she still has milk just before bed. DSD had milk just before bed right up until she was 10.

  • We did milk before bed in a sippy (once weaned) and eventually transitioned it to water. I think around 18 months it was just last sip of  water before bed. Her last sip of milk was down stairs before we went up to start our bedtime routine.  DD#1 is now almost 3 and still gets her last sip of water before she is tucked in. She is fully potty trained and fine with drinks before bed.

  • Last week we stopped cold turkey bottles for bed.  I give DS a snack (half banana and yougurt) around 7pm and at 730 we read a book, I offer water from a sippy cup then he goes to bed.

We still give a bottle first thing in the morning and during naps though.  Its mostly the convieniance factor of it, plus easier at daycare.  We will revisit the rest of the bottles in a few months.

  • We switched from bottles to sippy cups around 8-10 months and dropped a bedtime cup before DD's 1st birthday. She eats breakfast around 8-9 am (depending on weekday or weekend), lunch, snack and dinner is around 5:30 and that's it. If your LO is eating good sized meals I would start limiting the amount of milk until they don't ask for it anymore.
