Placenta Checks

For those who had a low-lying placenta or partial or complete previa at their 20 week ultrasound, when are you going back to check on the position?

I have an appt this week and will be 30 weeks.  i feel like that is too early, it could still move and I don't want to come back.

Re: Placenta Checks

  • I had a partial and I was seen 8 weeks later (My 20 week apt was at almost 18 w not 20) so I was 26 weeks when they rechecked and mine had moved out of the way and was lifted from pelvic rest.  Problem is, now I don't want sex anymore.  One thing that was really cool was how much he looked like a baby at 26w v/s looking like an alien from previous u/s.  I think if it has moved or is going to move it would have done enough by now for your MD to get a good read.  Good luck!

  • Im not sure if this will help where i don't have a low lying placenta, but it is low anterior and positioned at my c/s scar which can cause complications if they have to cut through it or if it has grown through the scar so i will have an MRI done the week before my scheduled c/s. FX it moves for everyone w/ diffcult placental positions.

  • I had a low-lying placenta at 18 weeks, and I have the follow-up US in about two week (so just shy of 30).  It's my understanding that by 28-30 weeks the baby is large enough that the placenta's position will not change that much.  Also, they told me that the majority of the time low-lying placentas move by 30 weeks.

  • I had a low lying one at my 20 week scan. Was rechecked at 28 weeks and it had moved up. It went from right at 2cm at 20 weeks to almost 4cm away at my 28 week. Doc said the placenta usually moves up as you get bigger/more round. I was super worried about it at first but after seeing the difference in those 8 weeks, I'm sure it will keep migrating away.

  • I have a low-lying anterior placenta. i guess it is time to recheck it!  I am just super-paranoid this pregnancy being PGAL that they will find something else wrong.  Thanks girls!
  • This may be a stupid question, but can you ever get previa after your 20 week scan? Like, I know it's common for it to move away from the cervix....is it possible for it to move towards it as well? My midwives aren't doing any more scans so I'm just curious if it's possible for that to develop without anyone knowing?

  • I found out I have a low-lying placenta at 20 weeks and was rechecked at 27 weeks. It's still a little low and has to move .15cm in order to be able to have a vaginal delivery. I am getting checked again at 35-37 weeks.

    Hi @ELTrain5,

My doctor said at my last visit that the placenta only moves one way...UP!  SO, if you don't have a previa at 20 weeks, it is impossible to get one.  That's one less thing to worry about!
  • @ElTrain5 my understanding is no, because less movement is possible as time goes on.  So there is a window during which placentas move up, babies start moving less, then the baby turns.  There just isn't enough space for things to float around anymore.  Of course, I don't KNOW any of this for sure, it's just what I understood from what they told me.

  • I had a low lying placenta and they checked at 28 weeks and it had moved. FX yours moved too!

  • I had a partial previa at 17 weeks and it had moved to low-lying by 22 weeks, still was low-lying at 26 weeks and we'll see at 30 but the delivery plan won't be changed in advanced based on that.

  • I get regular growth scans, and at the one last week, they did an intravaginal u/s (yay fun!) specifically to measure.  The tech said I was officially cleared to have a vaginal birth, although I am scheduling a RCS, so it looks like mine moved enough to not be problematic anymore.

  • I had a partial previa at 12 weeks, and it had moved by my AS at 19 weeks. Therefore, it seems reasonable that it could have moved in 10 weeks.

    BFP#2:  EDD 2/11/14, MMC confirmed 7/15/13 (growth stopped at 6 weeks), D&C @ 12 weeks 7/25/13

  • Mine was 1.9 cm at 19 weeks, and at my u/s last week at 29 weeks, it was 5 cm, so I'm in the clear. FX your measurement increases!

  • Mine moved out of the way. Was partially covering during my 18wk and then at my 24wk everything was good. Best wishes on a migrating placenta!!
  • I had complete previa at 18 weeks. I've had two ultrasounds since then and both times there was movement..... I was finally given the all clear at 29 weeks.

My dad is a radiologist, and he explained to me that the placenta doesn't actually move--it's attached to the wall of the uterus, and "moves" away from the cervix as the uterus grows or stretches, as opposed to actually moving around within the uterus. For this reason it will never move back down to the cervix once it's clear of it. My nurse confirmed this for me.

I had marginal preevia at 20 weeks, and was in the clear when they rechecked me at 28. So relieved!!

  • Full previa all through my last pregnancy, finally got the "all clear" at 36 weeks. The sonographer said about 80-90% of previas move on their own in time.

    This @ElTrain5

My midwife explained that at first ute is like a balloon only inflated a little and the placenta is like a stretchy postage stamp stuck to the inside. When they first check the placement of the postage stamp, as long as it is decently far away from the mouth of the balloon they know that it will be plenty far away once the balloon is fully inflated. If the stamp starts close to the mouth of the balloon they will want to check it again once the balloon is more fully inflated.

  • I had marginal previa at 22 weeks, .4 cm.  They'll check again at 32 weeks.  FX little boy has moved it out of the way.
  • Cleared at 28 weeks...
  • I had complete previa with DD at 20 weeks and was cleared at 36 weeks. My doctor said he would have been very surprised if it hadn't moved out of the way since almost all do.
