BLW Setback - allergies! Need encouragement!

Hi ladies, I know there have been several BLW posts lately so please forgive me for another one. We started BLW a couple weeks ago and LO has been rocking it - fruits, veggies, salmon, chicken, noodles. He's been doing great! Then on Friday he was munching on some cucumber and I was feeling brave and gave him a piece of toast with a very light coating of peanut butter (no family history of allergies on either side). Well, within 15 minutes he had red blotches all over his face! No trouble breathing or distress, but I freaked out. The pediatrician said to just give him benedryl and made me feel like crap because they still don't recommend peanuts until over 1 year. (Am I crazy, or doesn't the newer research say that the ideal time to intro potentially allergenic foods is by 7 months?) He's fine - benedryl cleared his face right up - but now I am paranoid and haven't given him anything new all weekend. How do you experienced moms deal with potential for allergies without following the whole "wait three days between new foods" advice?

  • I thought you weren't supposed to introduce peanut butter til like age 2-3?? At least that's what I did with my son. I know they are recommending trying some foods earlier but for some reason I thought peanuts/peanut butter was later.
  • Yep, our doctor said everything except honey and cow's milk (as a drink), assuming that everything is cooked all the way (no runny eggs or rare beef).

We still wait one day for each new potentially-allergic food, just so we would be able to pinpoint a reaction without doing a crazy elimination diet.
  • My pedi has also said no need to wait for a year to try peanut butter.

  • Okay, I'm a dumb dumb.  I didn't know you can give babies yogurt and cheese!  I thought anything with cows milk was to be avoided until later.  So, any cheese and yogurt is okay?

@LucyGoose8710 - what did the red blotches look like? Did they appear immediately? Did your LO seem bothered by them? DS gets red blotches on his forehead all the time but I have no idea why - they don't seem to be linked to any food but I'm not sure... They just show up randomly and go away after about an hour or two..

  • We were told to limit yogurt because it can typically be so high in sugar. All other foods except honey are fair game!
  • You all have definitely made me feel better. I will stop referring to this as the time that I poisoned my child. @Chrisanna0508 - that's a great suggestion, I hadn't heard that before. I'll use that before I try any more allergenic foods. And @ncase2 - these were all over his chin and just a few on his cheeks/under his eyes. Bright red and very pronounced. Nothing on his forehead though.

  • I know every pediatrician has slightly different recommendations, but ours said cow's milk in other things (like oatmeal, bread, etc.) is fine--as long as it is not a main component of the dish. We wait until about 8 months for yogurt and cheese.
  • That's why trying new foods is important! Now you know to be careful with peanuts. He just had a mild reaction and is fine. Much better than not knowing and have someone give him peanuts someday without knowing and maybe having a worse reaction.

I want to try peanut butter soon so I can know.

I've given cheese to v before. Not yogurt yet because I don't like yogurt lol. I want to be able to give her whatever I'm eating as she becomes more capable of eating. Dairy and peanuts be damned!
