Sleeping through the night???

My daughter will be one at the end of the month and still does not sleep through the night. Is any one else in the same boat?

I still BF, so she generally gets up once to fed and usually will go right back to bed after about 15 minutes or so. Our pediatrician said this was not uncommon for BF babies, but I hear so many people talk about how their 5 month old sleeps through the night and I wonder if we are missing something or doing something wrong.

Re: Sleeping through the night???

  • Yes! My LO turns one next week and still wakes up every night. We also BF and I nurse him once at night. We did sleep training a few months ago to get down to 1-2 times a night. I also sometimes feel like we are doing something wrong but I don't know what else to do, sleep training hasn't worked out quite the way DH and I thought. He goes down really easy at bedtime and for naps, we have a great schedule/routine, he eats well during the day.  At this point, I guess I'm just hoping he will outgrow it.

  • DS is not.

Even worse, he got into the recent habit of deciding to refuse to go back down after 3am and I spent every morning in the past week or two on the couch or in the living room recliner trying to catch a few more hours of sleep. And he refuses to nap in his crib anymore either, so my only "break" is if I'm holding him while he sleeps.

We're re-sleep-training. We did CIO/Ferber a few months ago and it was great until he started cutting 4 teeth at once while dealing with a cold. We slipped right back into bad habits, so time to break them again.

  • DS also wakes up 1 time in the middle of the night and he is BF.  From about 2-4 months he slept through the night.  The in-laws came to visit for a month when he was 4 months and from then on he gets up at least once per night.  I also hope that he outgrows it.

@SarahRae85 - DS has done that a few times to me where he wakes in the middle of the night and won't go back to sleep.  It is a killer.  I feel so bad for you that it has gone one for a couple weeks.  You must feel like a zombie.

  • My daughter turned 1 last week, and she still wakes up several times a night, usually every 2-4 hours.  Most times, she goes right back to sleep once I pop my boob back in her mouth (we bedshare).  I'm thrilled at thought that one day (hopefully) she'll sleep from the time she goes to bed until it's time to wake up.

  • Thank you so much! I feel all your pain, but am thrilled to know I am not alone!
  • DD has recently slept through the night twice but I can count on my remaining fingers on one hand the number of times she's done it in her year of life!  We're up at least once, sometimes twice a night.  She's BF but we have started giving her a half/half bottle of formula and cows milk plus a little oatmeal.

This.  But my only concern is he seems to cry so hard now if we try to cio that he sounds like he's gagging himself.  And I do not want to clean throw up at 3 am!

  • So glad I'm not the only one in this situation. My DS turned 1 on 2/27 and is still not sleeping through the night. He wakes up once, sometimes twice. I feed him a bottle and he goes back to sleep. We also bed share.

  • DD is not STTN, not really. We bedshare, she roots in her sleep. She will wake if I get out of bed.

I hear that without sleep training most babies will STTN on their own by 2, the minority will STTN earlier.

  • Since this popped back up the list, I suppose I'll share a tip I received that works for bottle fed and BF babies.

Instead of offering formula/nursing during wake-ups, start trying to offer a sippy cup of water. Lacking the nutritional value, there's a chance they might decide waking up for water just isn't worth it and start skipping mid-night wakings by their own choice.

FWIW, re-Ferberizing my LO went well. In fact, because we had already done it once, he caught on even quicker the second time. Instead of a week of fighting it, it was only two nights and only one of those nights had any middle of the night wakings.
