Late Term and Child Loss

Excited for My New Venture!

So it's been a struggle for me lately to go to my Infant Loss Support group. The other couple there lost their son to SIDS (heartbreaking).  But I've been so jealous that they are able to do fundraisers, raffles, etc to support SIDS research.  They have an organization to rally behind; something to drive them.  There isn't anything for stillbirth.  It's to generalized. And that's been hard.  So today it hit me!

I've started a charity project in my area. I would love to extend it to other areas of the US, but this is the start of it!

Basically I want to make crafts for families going through stillbirth, SIDS, NICU journeys, infant cancers, etc.  I want to include everything from crochet/knit hats and blankets, sewn items, stuffed animals, cards, letters, scrapbooking cards... whatever floats your boat!  And I think by making it a community charity project here, it'll be a great time to fellowship, come together, inspire others, and educate people on the reality of these things that happen!  I know that several of you have gone through one, if not more, of these heartbreaking times.  And I think it's going to be very theraputic for me to outreach this way.

If any of you want to get involved, please let me know!  It's time to make a difference!!

This is so neat. I don't sew [yet] but have started doing more DIY stuff like no-sew blankets and tutus. I'd love to help out!

  • I love this idea! I cherish the little crocheted hats, gowns and blankets our sons were dressed in after they were born. I do think giving back would be very therapeutic--any recommendations for online tutorials? (Maybe I can take a class at JoAnne's or something?) I remember the basics from when my mom taught me to crochet, but haven't tried anything other than very basic scarves.

  • How sweet! I wish I was more crafty. I love the blanket and hat that she was able to wear. My hospital also gave us a memory folder that was sown to hold all the important mementos and such. I think the idea is such a sweet gesture that provides comfort during those darkest hours.
  • That is such a great idea, and a wonderful thing to do in memory of your baby.  I wish I were, as pps have said, more crafty.  Good luck with everything :)
  • Love the idea, and love your attitude!

  • Thank you everyone!  I am just hoping I can get the word out. I'd love to make a page (Facebook or something) for the organization and keep track of how many items are donated.  That way even if someone lives in California (I'm in Missouri), I can keep track of how this program is affecting people for the better!

@MaybeJoleisa Pinterest is a GREAT place to find tutorials and they are free on blogs and such.  If you ever have crochet questions, feel free to message me. I have a crochet business called Simply Stitched by J.  I've been doing it for years and I'd be happy to help!

For those of you interested in helping, please like my business page (there will be lots of info on the Craft For a Cause there) until I can get interest built up and a page started.  If you do make things and donate, I'd like to attach something (a tag, card, etc) that says it was through Craft For A Cause.  I will have to add a subheading to the name because that name is used for tons of stuff.  Just let me know if you donate so I can keep the record.

  • One of the other moms in my local loss group is doing something like this now for the anniversary of her daughter's death. She is collecting blankets to give to the hospital where we delivered for other people who experience a loss.

  • This is such a great idea and a wonderful way to bring something good out of something no one should have to experience. I'm waaaaay out of your neck of the woods, but would love to start something up here at some point. How would you feel about me "stealing" your idea and running with it? I understand if it's personal and you'd rather not have someone up in Canada doing the same thing.

  • @LyndseyTS  I think is a wonderful idea for you to do and I don't mind if you "steal" it.  The whole point is to spread hope and compassion to those families who are sitting right where so many of us have been.  It would go against the whole idea to deny you that. :P  Please feel free to be my "sister" organization!  We can help each other out and do this together!

If you start up a site (on facebook or anything) please let me know so I can help support you!

  • @sparrowmomma24 Thank you! I will let you know. It probably won’t be soon because we’re still trying to just walk through day-by-day, but I find it really inspiring and really do want a way to give back to others who are hurting in the same way. When the rest of the “stuff” is finished, I think it would be a great way to turn our experience into something positive. Thanks for being so strong and inspiring.

@neptunebljc Though I wish it were under better circumstances, it is nice to meet a fellow Ontarian J If it’s something you’d be interested in doing, maybe we can connect (depending on where in Ontario you are…).

  • Thank you everyone! I just hit my 6 month mark and it's hard every day. But I know that by finding something positive to get behind, it will help my grieving process.  It's amazing that there are no organizations for stillbirth.  It's hard!  So I decided to make my own!
@LyndseyTS  You let me know if you need anything. ANYTHING!
