How many names will your baby have?

My hubby and I thought we had decided on our sons name, which consisted of 3 names - first, middle, and last. I now was thinking I would like to add my maiden name as a second middle name, as tribute to my family and culture. However, I'm skeptical of such a long name. So, I was wondering, how many names will your baby have or for STM - did you do this for your other children? If you've done 4 or more names, what did you do when it came time for them to go to school and they had to learn to write their name?

Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated, thanks ladies! :)

  • Our kid will have both our last names.

  • My LO will have 4 names. First the two middle names and the last night. I had one middle name picked out and then my husband wanted to add another one so I just said sure because both names mean something to us and our family.

We thought about the two last names thing, but in the end went with three. The names we chose for DS honor both sides of the family, and I know that even without that, there are stronger ways to connect him to my side if the family.
This LO will have 3as well - if we ever pick a name.
  • At some point, LO will have three names (first, middle, last). We just have no idea what they will be yet! (Except the last name.)

  • I posted this on the Baby Names board as well and one of the moms on there said her husband also has 4 names. He uses his first name, two middle name initials, and his last name. I think this is a great way to shorten it, which is making me lean towards the four names. We could also just have him use his first and last name in school, and as the first poster said, teach him how to write his middle names at home.

Also, there are plenty of you who also chose four names. Come to think of it, some of my cousins in Portugal have 6-7 names each.. I mean, if they can do it (learn to write all of their names), why can't he? lol.

Thanks for making our decision a little easier ladies! Can't wait to talk to the hubby about it. :)

  • As a kid that had two middle names and a hyphenated last name, I'd like to say how much is sucked. Also, when you have multiple middle names it causes problems on official documents (like at banks or when you try to get student loans) because often times there will only be room for one middle initial but the company isn't used to dealing with multiple middle names so there is a lot of extra red tape you have to go through just to prove you really are who you say you are when the information doesn't match up exactly.
Son: Jackson, 11/02/06, stillborn due to PPROM and IUGR. Over the next ten years we had 9 miscarriages from 8-14 weeks. On May 18, 2016 my daughter, Ridley, was born. We're OADNBC.
  • We use four names. The first is the name we choose and then we use two middle names to honor family members and then DH's last name. It wasn't something we initially planned on doing but with DS 1 we both wanted to use our father's names for his middle name because DH's dad died in 98 and mine died in 99.

  • My husband and I both hyphenated our last name when we married so we are doing:

    First Name, Middle Name, MyLastName-HisLastName

  • Myself and all my sisters save one have two middle names.  DD has two middle names.  Baby 2.0 may too.
  • It's kind of 4 names since the first name is two separate words, no hyphen.

  • 3 names....first middle and last
    Lilypie First Birthday tickers
  • 4: First name, middle name, both our last names hyphenated.
  • LO will have 3, hopefully we will choose a name at some point! I have always had 3, but 4 or more is pretty common in my family. My brother has 4, and most often uses two middle initials. His only complaint about it is that he doesn't care for one the names, so sometimes he doesn't use that one. Some forms automatically cut his name off, but usually in the middle of the first middle name (if that makes sense) and I have the same problem due to having long first and middle names. Many of my relatives have their mothers' or grandmothers' maiden names as one of their middle names

  • DD has 4. First Middle My last name (as a middle name) Dad's last name (as her last name). I never took DHs last name. I sat on the fence for a bit about including my last name as her middle name, but in the end it felt right and DH was in full support. When give her name, we typically only say her first and last.

We will be doing the same with all our children.

  • LO will have 2 names - first and last. Its a good thing, because we can't even agree on one name, nevermind 2. DH and I, and all of our siblings, only have 2.

I've said it before but the bump kind of blew my mind with the emphasis on the middle names. Ain't no thing with the people I grew up around.

this is interesting to hear. I've been told a lot lately that you should fill up all the spaces on the birth certificate form (like two middle names or whatever) because it makes it harder for someone to steal your identity. I have absolutely no idea if that's true or not but weird that it would be recommended for that and then have it be an issue verifying who you are

I've heard this multiple times from friends with more than one middle name. DS just has a first, middle, and last name and so will DD.

I'm not new. I just hate The Bump.

  • I briefly considered adding my maiden name in as a middle name but it's horribly Czech and doesn't mesh well with the rest of his name.

I went to school with a girl who had 3 middle names and she had a terrible time on every official form because you only get one box for a middle initial. Apparently the motor vehicle department didn't even know how to handle it.

DS1 has four names: first name, two middle names (both grandfather's names) and DH's last. I really wanted to give him my maiden name as a middle name, but I just couldn't do that to him. The names are all very traditional Italian names as my husband's family is from Italy and work well together.

DS2 will have three: first, middle and last. His given names are all very un-Italian. DH is curious as to how his parents will handle saying the names as they don't speak English very well. I think we'll be fine and kinda don't care.  :)

  • DD had her first, two middle (one from my side and one from DH's side) and our last. I hyphenated my last name so I have four as well. And because she has four names all subsequent children will as well.
