NBR: Advice on PT please?

I realize there is a potty training board, and I've read through the first few pages to try and get some insight. We bought DS some Gerber training pants and I have been putting him in them while we are at home, starting yesterday. I'm off for a week (spring break), and figured this was as good a time as any to try and get him out of diapers since we'll have another one in diapers in a little over a month. He'll be three next month and supposedly already uses the potty, at least for #1, at school during the day. At home, he just pees in his diaper or training pants. I have tried looking up the "three day method" people talk about, but there seem to be multiple versions...? He will pee in the potty first thing in the morning, and is rewarded with one M&M for trying, and another if he produces. So far he has peed in his underpants within 30 minutes of having them on, and gets visually ashamed when I notice. I do feel like he knows what he is doing, but I'm not sure if I'm doing the right thing or need to change my approach. Help?  :-??

    Ooh, potty training. Fun!

Here's what we did fwiw. I took 5 days when I wasn't working and had DD pantless for the first 3 days. We stayed over the tile in the kitchen for easy clean up and we had her little potty chair in here. Without pants/panties the idea is they know they have to go or have gone easier.

After that things I read said to put LO in just pants for 3 months. We did pants and panties just because. I would avoid any kind of training pants though since they're really diapers and I think kids know that.

DD did pretty well with this. She seemed really ready though and daycare was 100% on board with what I wanted to do. I have heard many toddlers regress in poty training when a new baby makes an appearance though. So I'm already expecting this. I don't know if it would be more the case if you've potty trained more recently or not.

    Good luck!!

  • Two pieces of advice I remember-one, do not ask the child to "try". This will just lead to frustrationand misreading their own potty cues. Ask them to tell you when they feel the feeling to go. Ask it 30 times an hour when you are starting. This puts the onus of responsibility on them to tell you when they have to go not you asking them if they have to go If they go in their pants rush them to the potty and have them finish there. No shaming or scolding. Also, ask them if their underwear are dry. Make a big deal out of it every time they say yes. You are positively reinforcing the behavior you do want. They will be sick of you asking both of these questions but keep doing it. We also just used regular underwear from the start. No training pants or pull ups. Good luck!
  • Here's how I do it with my kids at school.

Underwear all day when the child is awake and diapers for sleep. No going back to diapers ever, not for car rises, grocery shopping etc. as it's confusing to the child and undermines their abilities. So I always make a point to say never ever go back and keep trying and stay consistent.

Start off every 20 minutes then adding time from there. I give no rewards or excessive praise. Washing hands and flushing is enjoyable for the child so a natural reward for them.

Your little one gets ashamed because they know it's not supposed To happen in their underwear is my best guess. But it's good as they are figuring out their body and learning via trial and error.

Give them time and try to remain neutral about it all as it's really all no big deal in the end and they will get there. Take one day at a time, good and bad and remember it's temporary!

You'll also figure out what works for you and little one, body cues, phrases and timing. All trial and error. Keep at it mama! :)
  • Thanks everyone! The "training pants" I am using are a washable, cotton kind by Gerber. Are y'all saying there is a better kind, or are you thinking I am using a disposable, diaper-like training pant? I just want to make sure I understand. Lol

  • The gerber undies are great :) hold a little bit but still the child feels wet. I always suggest whatever the parent wants the child to wear works for me (training pants vs. panties etc.).

I wouldn't go the pull up route, they are made to draw wetness from the body and are disposable, thus no natural consequences of wetting one's self.

Oh, I thought you meant training pants like pull ups. I don't have experience with those. I would think if LO can feel the wetness when he has an aaccident you're probably good to go.

  • We did the no pants/underwear thing and just hung out with a bathroom close by for the first few days. I'd take her to sit on the potty every 15-20 minutes and we would read books on the potty. If she went she got an M&M. I agree with PPs. No more diapers except at bedtime. Otherwise he might learn to just hold it and wait for a diaper. I love the gerber training pants. That is what we use for our nighttime potty training. You have to try to go frequently (even after they are "trained") because they haven't figured out how to hold it. Good luck!

  • We did the three day method...underwear only (except at bed/nap time), stayed in the house, taken to the potty every ___ Minutes getting longer and longer, we used a sticker chart and 1 M&M or smartie as a reward. Good luck!!

  • DD (22 months) isn't PT'd yet, but for the last week or so, she's used the potty 1-5+ times a day. She's in CDs and we're not pushing the subject since we assume there will be regression once the baby comes.

We let her go pant-less after a diaper change and we ask her frequently if she needs to go, and when she does, she gets a "hurray!" and/or a high five. Her reward is that she gets to dump the pee in the toilet, wipe and flush, and wash her hands. Seriously, she will ask to go to the potty just so she can flush the toilet and wash her hands.

We'll probably get her some undies and work with her more over the summer after baby is here. When we think she's really ready for full-on PTing, we'll do the undies only method and stick with CDs for naps/bedtime.
