Almost 4 month old doesn't want to be held

Nora will be 4 months next week, she is going through a phase (which I'm sure will last for the next almost 18 years) that she doesn't want to be held. She wants to be going...she loves being on the floor kicking and playing, she loves being in her rocking chair laughing at the things hanging in front of her face, she love it when she lies down on the bed or whatever and people sing songs and play pat-a-cake, etc.  However, she hates tummy time, she doesn't want to be held, she doesn't want to sit on our laps or be in the carrier.

My anxiety is kicked into overdrive over the fact that her head looks a little flat at the back. She does favour one side when she sleeps, and I do try and shift her head so she is facing the other way, but I can't do it while I'm asleep and she always ends up in that position. She goes to the doctor on Apr. 8 for her check-up and vaccines, so I'll bring it up then, but I keep thinking that every second she is lying down her head is getting flatter.

Any other options for a way of keeping her off the back of her head without causing her stress?

  • Have you tried putting her in a seat that offers support?  I just got one and my 4 month old loves it!  I got the summer 3 stage super seat, and it will double as a booster seat when he is ready for that.  It has toys that he can play with and he'll sit there for quite a while.

  • Try to tortle hat maybe to force her to sleep with her head to one side.

  • The Boppy Noggin pillow prevents flathead when she is lying down playing. It has a hole in the middle. It's sold on Amazon, but it shouldn't be used when she's sleeping.
  • If she's in a crib or bed to sleep she will always turn her head the same direction. Lay her the opposite way from normal in the crib.

  • Don't worry about it unless your pediatrician is concerned. My son had a noticeable flat spot on his head at his 4 month checkup. It was symmetrical, and his pediatrician said to keep trying to do tummy time (he still wasn't a fan of it yet) but otherwise not to worry about it, that he would grow out of it by the time he was one. Maybe a week later he started really enjoying tummy time and now he spends most of his floor time on his tummy, and his flat spot is going away. Remember that babies heads continue to grow, and their skulls are still malleable for quite awhile, so any flatness she has now will likely go away as she gets more mobile and continues to grow.
