Anyone want to talk Hunger Games trilogy? *Spoilers*

I just finished the books (way late) and I'm dying to talk about it. **spoilers**

I almost gave up on the book when Prim died. She was the only character I liked from start to finish. Did it ever say why she was there to begin with? Was it Coin's doing? I'm actually legit pissed she was killed off.

Why did Boggs say to trust no one when he was dying? Surely she had to trust her team. Following Pollux in the Avox tunnels and C (can't think of her name) above ground to find Tigess' shop, so she had to trust them.

Why did Katniss and Haymich (sp?) vote yes to have a Hunger Games with Capitol children? I feel like that part was kind of glossed over. Was it just to prove what a POS Coin was and how alike she was to Snow?

  • Lots of good questions. I don't remember many details from the books.

I also liked Prim. Her death was symbolic in a way - the loss of innocence. The Hunger Games with capitol children sounds quite vengeful. As a reader you'd expect more from a heroine, but she was flawed as were many characters.

Your next series to put on your reading list is Divergent.

Always. (See what I did there?)

Prim was there as part of the like Red Cross. I think we're meant to never really know for sure if it was Coin or Snow's people that set off the bomb.
I think Boggs really meant not to trust Coin, to really only trust herself and her instincts.

I thought Katniss voted yes because she had already decided to kill Coin and didn't want to arouse suspicion. I thought Haymitch picked up on some part of her plan and that's why he said "I'm with the mockingjay," to signal that he was still part of the revolution or whatever.

  • @little jerry Good point. I agree now that I think if it bc it points to how Katniss and H had that unspoken communication. He must've known what she was plotting.

  • Also, I feel like Gale and Katniss' relationship ended abruptly. I know that she partly blames him for the bombs that killed Prim, but to never check on her again? It was kind of weird, right?

  • My memory is total shit these days! I need to go back and ready Mockingjay.  It's the only one I only read once.  I also need to go back and re-read the first two Divergent books before I can finish the trilogy!

  • @ClaireFraser‌ Interesting. So you think voting yes for the Hunger Games was just proving how flawed her character was at that point and not a foreshadow of her killing Coin? I like to think Katniss voted yes bc she knew Coin would die and therefore the games would never happen. Likewise for Hayemich. I don't like to think they were THAT rotten on the inside.

  • I will say, I'm not sure she had decided to kill Coin when she voted yes, but I think she knew she didn't trust Coin and had some loose plan in her mind.

  • It's been awhile since I read Mockingjay but I was mostly disappointed with a few segments at the end that were all recap while Katniss was hurt and then held for "trial". That was a huge drawback of the first person narrative. I wanted those parts fleshed out more with dialogue instead of a few pages of abrupt summary. "Hey Katniss, the war ended like so, and now you're pardoned. Try to have a life. The end." I'm hoping for the movies to correct this.

I need to reread but I've loaned them out to a friend. Curses!

  • @lexilupin I think the problem is throughout the series, we got an inside peek at Katniss' inner thought process. We struggled through her decisions along with her, but this one had no explanation of her thoughts. We were left wondering if she did it out of vengeance, grief, or if she was plotting... At that point, any of those were possibilities I think.

  • I liked the first 2 books more for sure @wordsmith26 but I have to admit, I couldn't get it up for Mockingjay after Prim died. ::holding a grudge::

@laurelbee about the whole book, or Katniss specifically?  This article touches on a lot of the problems I have with it:

I want to reiterate, I like HG.  I don't think people who think Katniss is a badass are feeble-minded or anti-feminist. But I agree with the author of the article I linked; I can't think of a real, solid example of why Katniss is a great female heroine other than "she's better than Bella."  Which is really fucking sad.

Interesting article. Written with a little too much of a condescending tone for my liking. But I do agree about the feminist part.

  • I loved Katniss as a heroine. I thought she was real, and relatable. I'm sure if it was me in those situations, I would be wishy washy as Hell! I liked that she had flaws, and questioned herself.

I thought Katniss was pretty relatable and realistic too. I don't see her as a strong female badass, but as a person with strengths and flaws just like, well, everyone. She could be a badass at times, but she was also a human and young.

I didn't like the love triangle per se, but I love Katniss and Peeta together and thought their relationship developed well for a YA piece of escapism, which is what the trilogy was for me.

  • I also don't like that author's take on Thresh. I think she's projecting. Thresh didn't kill Katniss because of Rue. Without Rue, ya, racist. But with Rue there, that action/ scene makes sense regardless of race.
