9w+3d, Bright red blood but strong HB? Very worried, any advice greatly appreciated

Hi Ladies, I posted a while back (around 5-6 weeks) about some light brown spotting which lasted a week and ultrasound showed all was fine. Since then, everything seemed normal, I had a routine ultrasound this Monday and everything looked perfect. Baby even measured bigger then expected. Yesterday evening, I went to use the restroom and a good amount of bright red and brown blood gushed out. My husband and I rushed to the ER where my HCG was 245,000 and the baby had a strong heartbeat. I have had no more blood since then (only some dark brown spotting which the ER doc said to expect),but I am very bloated and feel a tightness in abdomen ( not cramps.. it might even be me over thinking things). My husband and I had sex 24 hours before the "gush" and this would be the time that I would have started my period. DO you think either of these could contribute? I still have all preg symptoms, even barfed this morning. I am just so worried! My OB followed up and said he feels everything is fine and looks great but there is always a chance it is the beginning of a miscarriage. Also to note, I have a at home doppler and checked the HB twice today and the HB is still a strong 170 BPM. I am thankful for any and all thoughts, info, advice and prayers. Thank you!

  • Like PP said, it could be a lot of things.  I would definitely follow up with your doctor, and take it easy until then.  I'm sorry you're having this stressful time right now and I hope that everything turns out okay for you!!  For right now, keep focusing on that great heartbeat!

  • Thanks for your replies! The bleeding has stoped. It was really just one big gush but I am still having brown spotting when wiping or throwing up. Wishing your ladies happy and healthy pregnancies!

The good news is that there is a heartbeat and it's staying strong.

As for the bleeding, it could be any number of things. It could be the start a miscarriage, it could be that you irritated your cervix while having sex (though that is usually more spotting and not a gush, but stranger things have happened.), it could be a subchorionic hemorrhage, or it could be that you are a bleeder, which while not normal, can be common and is always scary.

I would follow up with your doctor again in a day or two if the bleeding continues you in any form, especially if it's more red than anything else. Ask for an ultrasound to make sure the baby is okay and to check for a SCH.

I really hope you get an answer and the bleeding stops.
    All of this!

I was one of the unfortunate bleeders. I would gush bright red blood, which would terrify me, throughout my pregnancy for no apparent reason. I would always call my OB, go in and be checked out, and never really get an answer as to where it was coming from. I had a medium sch that resolved, but still more bleeding.

The good news is that I now have my happy and healthy 10 week old baby girl here with me.

Sorry you're dealing with bleeding. Hopefully it was just a one time deal.!

  • I was a bleeder.  I did have a small SCH that eventually absorbed, but I still spotted.  I remember the big gush I had like it was yesterday because I woke up, felt a pop (weird I know), felt wet, ran to the bathroom, and bright red.  Scared the crap out of me!  Everything looked fine though.  I spotted/bled through 90% of my pregnancy.  He is a cutiepatootie 1 year old now though!

I will warn you though because no one warned me that bleeding during pregnancy is a very common precursor in mamas that PPROM or have PTL.  I did PPROM at 28 weeks and delivered at 30.  That doesn't mean it will happen to you, but I just wanted you to have the information.

#1 Natural Miscarriage at 8 weeks
    #2 PPROM at 28w Delivered at 30w. 7w NICU stay. Now a H&H Boy!
