All-in-One Car Seats

Happy Sunday everyone!

I've been researching a lot of convertible car seats for my LO, but then I came across the idea of an All-in-One. I would greatly appreciate your opinions and experiences on the following questions!

What made you decided to go with a standard convertible as opposed to an All-in-One or visa versa?

For standard convertible, I like the Chicco Nextfit, anyone have experience with it?

For All-in-One, I like the Evenflo Symphony DLX and the Snugli AIO, anyone have experience with these?

I can't decide if it's worth getting an AIO so I won't have to get a booster later, but it seems that with some of them, you might need to get a booster anyways?!

My LO is petite and longer than she is heavier. She weighs around 16.5lbs and is 26".

Thank you!

I believe many of those can't be used rear facing. Kids should be rear faced until 2 at least, but really 3-4. We got a Graco MySize 70 which is a great option for taller kids due to it's high shell. The Chicco Nextfit is the other popular option. Britax aren't used for kids taller than 30 percentile
this. I haven't researched the options but my understanding is the "all in ones" aren't used for rearfacing.  (which is confusing because you would assume they could be)   We went with the nextfit because we have a tall kid and want to rearface her as long as possible.

The 2 I mentioned above can be used rear-facing which is why I considered them. Good to know about the Britax. I considered it for a bit, but prefer the Nextfit over it.

I feel like this is going to be one of those things that I just need to make a decisions and stick with it. I get over-whelmed with too many choices

I like the plain old convertible unless your going with a diono. The high back boosters aren't that expensive TBA. They will be in the convertible for awhile. We got the peg perego which I love and my ds is 30 inches and 24lbs.
That's good to know! It seems the AIO boosters are pretty short when converted so that's why I was wondering if it's worth getting bc I might have to get a tall-back one later anyways!

  • Maybe I missed the memo... Why can't Britax be used for kids over 30th percentile? I have a convertible that I love but my son is long and lean. 75th percentile. The instructions say for kids up to 49 in. Do you just mean when they are older?
  • I'm the crazy one who has a tall kid and a Britax :) Because we planned on another kid, the convertible maybe even more sense. We will move the baby to the convertible in the big kid to a booster, and the baby will stay in the convertible until it expires.
Would this work for 2u2 you think? My LO's will be 16 months apart and I feel like I wouldn't move my first LO to a booster until much much later. If they were further apart I think that would be perfect though!

Graco Nautilus lasts through multiple changes (5 point FF and RF, booster with the back, backless booster) until the child is 100 lb.  I think they are under $200.  Can't beat it, and they are rated highly for safety, especially now that the buckle issue has been taken care of.

I didn't realize it was RF! I kept seeing it as only FF at 20 lbs! Maybe I misread something? It seemed like a good contender!

Check out the website Car Seat for the Littles or their Facebook group.
I have them as a friend but haven't really looked much on their page bc it just seems like random pictures of kids in different car seats haha! I'll take a closer look :)

  • I got the Britax Pavilion. I hope my LO doesn't outgrow it by 3 but if he does, he does.
  • We have the Nextfit and I like it so far.  The straps are more difficult to tighten than the Keyfit, but it's getting easier with use.
  • I'm the crazy one who has a tall kid and a Britax :) Because we planned on another kid, the convertible maybe even more sense. We will move the baby to the convertible in the big kid to a booster, and the baby will stay in the convertible until it expires.

Crap.  Stuck in a quote box.  :(

Anyway, this is what we did.  We bought a convertible when Marnie was born.  Shortly before Amanda was born, we bought an AIO for Marnie, which she'll be using until she's out of the booster.  Amanda is now in the convertible.

If we have a third, said baby will likely also go in the convertible.  We are going to use that thing until it wears right the heck out (or is no longer legal).

How we're going to fit all these seats in the car is another matter entirely.

I don't trust all in ones. But that my gut, not any research.

  • Another Britax lover. DD turned 3 last month and is in about the 60th percentile and still fits just fine. You can't go just by height, you also need to take into account their height to their shoulders while seated. To say it won't work for someone over the 30th percentile past age three is untrue and a bad generalization.

I'm just going by all the research I've seen and what our car seat tech said regarding tall kids. As someone with a kid who is in the 75th percentile, I read a lot so I could minimize purchases.

Also, note that Britax redid their seats recently and the shells are now shorter.

It's possible these kids are in the older style.

But hey, I'm just repeating what I've read and been told.

The new and old styles, as far as Britax website says, has the same max seated shoulder height which is 16.75". Out of curiosity I just measured DDs seated shoulder height and got about 13.5", so I imagine she can get another at least two years probably more before she grows 3+" in the torso. A kid would have to be pretty darn tall at 3 to have that big a torso. Definitely not 30%. Not trying to be argumentative, just want to give people an idea of actual numbers in case they are considering it.

  • We were told by our local fire department that all in ones are not a safe option.
Thanks for this! I felt questionable about it as well and I feel like I'm getting a lot of positive feedback.

I think after this I'm going to stick with a standard convertible and just get a booster later.

    Thank you ladies!

  • We use the Evenflo Symphony for DS1 and we bought another for DS2 but haven't installed it yet. It definitely can be used RF and we have a Honda Pilot and Accord (even in DH's Accord it fit RF in the middle). I am hopeful we can put the two seats next to each other with LO RF in the middle but if not we'll put him RF on the left and DS1 FF on the right in each car.

Here's my thinking on that.  All of the seats have to be safety certified.  They aren't going to sell something that is knowingly unsafe.  Sure some will have better ratings and probably user error is the cause of more problems than the seats themselves.

That is the one we have but we haven't installed it yet. I know Target just had a good deal on them but those coupons/sales might be over.

Looks like I need to keep an eye out for the next sale! :D

Okay totally lurking from aug 13:

Just bought a convertible from target today. I got a $159 car seat for $83. This plan works for graco. I got the my ride 70 it's On sale this week for $135.

It's on cartwheel for an extra 10% off plus if you go to target's website you can print 20% off infant purchase and a $20 of $100 baby purchase. So if you want a graco you can use this . If it's a different brand there you could still use 20% off and $20 off. Have cashier scan 20% coupon first. This deal goes til the 5th I believe.
