Feedings

Okay so after they get back to their birth weight and you don't have to wake them up to feed, how many feedings is your LO getting a day? We will be 5 weeks tomorrow and 10 lb baby. Since born, he has slept 3-4 hours at a time and I was doing 6 feedings a day. Now during the night though I am not waking him and he is sleeping great(definitely no complaints) but it's making it to where it's only been 5 feedings the last few days. I just don't want to stop our progress!
Anyone else have these concerns/issues or anyone have some thoughts for me?!
Plan on calling LC tomorrow.

Re: Feedings

  • Hmm, it does seem a little low. Are you FF or BF? I'm guessing BFing since you mentioned a LC. What is the wet/poopy diaper situation? Is he having periods of awake time as well? Otherwise generally a happy baby and not lethargic?

If he seems ok, happy, and is producing 6-8 wet diapers a day as well as pooping normally I would not worry too much, but checking in with someone can't hurt!

  • Hmm... I agree- seems maybe a little low? My almost 6 week old is doing 8 feeds a day. But of course ask your pediatrician if you are concerned. Could be that baby is thriving and fine on 6 feeds!
  • My 5 week old is doing 7 feeds a day. He's gaining weight and all that good stuff, so I'm not worried.

It's probably fine, but if you're worried, definitely ask! My LO is 8 weeks, and she sleeps super long stretches at night, so she gets 5-6 feedings per day. She has plenty of wet/poopy diapers, and seems to be gaining weight based on the fact that she is outgrowing clothes. (She hasn't been weighed since 11 days old on Feb 14, when she was back to birth weight).

ETA: she is EBF... And sleeps 8 hours most nights, so basically skips a couple feedings then. She does eat longer per feeding though, 20-30min.

  • My little guy is 7 weeks, and we range between 6-7 feedings a day. Usually 7, with him sleeping one 6 -7 hour chunk at night.

  • DS is 7 weeks and he's still getting about 8 feedings a day probably 90% breastmilk.

  • I agree with everything @RosiePeare said. We've had some weight gain issues so we're much more diligent with our 7w old, but if you're worried, I'd talk to the doc and see if they want you to wake to feed more frequently during the day... we do!

  • Thanks girls! Only BFing. Have a list of questions for the LC and calling in the morning. Wasn't worried about 6 feedings but definitely don't want to backtrack with the weight if he slides back down to 5 so that's what I am worried about. Wet(at least 6) and dirty diapers(at least 2) are good. We will see tomorrow.
