Three gestational sacs?

At my 8 week ultrasound, there were three gestational sacs. The first measured on target with a baby with a strong heartbeat. The second measured about 6 weeks and looked empty. The third measured about 5 weeks and looked empty. I have a second ultrasound scheduled for 10 weeks to see if things have changed. Has anyone experienced something like this before with a successful multiples pregnancy?

Re: Three gestational sacs?

  • I'm currently 28 wks with triplets and they were all right on target from the beginning.
My 16-month-old daughter had a twin at first.  At the 6 wk u/s, we saw 2 sacs, but the Dr already said 1 looked different.  It took until 11 wks for everything to completely disappear, however.

  • Mine both had heartbeats at 7w. I suppose it could be possible some of your eggs implanted later much later than the first. Good luck!

  • I had 2 sacs, 2 HB's at 8 weeks, but it was difficult to get the 2nd one's HB.  At first it appeared that it wouldn't be viable, but it turned out OK.  However, it's possible that for you the 2 sacs may not be viable, but you're well on your way to having a healthy singleton.

  • We had three sacs to begin with but only 2 had heartbeats, the third stayed around until 13 weeks and then disappeared and we now have just the two. The third never developed anything and remained empty every week.

  • Two sacs and two heartbeats at 7w2d. There was only one sac and no heartbeat at 5w3d.

  • I had 2 sacs at 5 1/2 weeks, the doctor didn't think the second was developing and told me it was most likely a vanishing twin, no heartbeats at that point.  When I went back at 10 weeks there were two happy healthy babies growing and measuring on schedule.

  • I wanted to update for anyone else with a similar question... I am currently 12 weeks with a healthy singleton. The two sacs did not develop and at the 10 week ultrasound there was not a significant difference in the size of the sacs, but they appeared slightly smaller. I was told it is vanishing triplets.
  • I'm sorry to hear that, @kate2625 but happy for your healthy singleton. Congrats on your pregnancy and a healthy and happy 9 months.
  • I'm so sorry for your losses. Best wishes for a healthy and uncomplicated pregnancy for you.
