Quick timeline:
Feb 25th- 1cm dilated, 80% effaced @ 38w3d
March 3rd- 3cm dilated, 80% effaced @ 39w2d
March 10th- 3cm dilated, 80% effaced. Membranes striped @ 40w2d
March 13th- 3cm dilated, 80% effaced. @ 40w5d..induced at 8:08pm

On Thursday, 3/13/14, at my appointment my Dr suggested sweeping my membranes again. I told him no. He said "Don't you want to have this baby soon?" I told him that I would rather be induced since the sweeping only gave me some cramps last time. He said "Okay, you can go in right now if you want to!" I was there with my MIL and I told him that I needed to call my DH and see what he wanted to do. We agreed on going in that night.

DH came home right away and we both got showers and got everything loaded in the car. I will admit I was stalling a little because I was scared. MIL was all smiles and full of excitement. We called everyone and their brother to let them know I was going to the hospital to be induced!

We went to Steak-and-Shake on the way to the hospital. It was delicious! My Dr told me to make sure I got something to eat on the way..since inducement can take a while. My mom and sister showed up not too long after we arrived!

-Inducement started at 8:08pm on 3/13/14 (pitocin)
-Water broke at 2:05am 3/14/14. That is when my pain began!! I was begging for my epidural at that point.
-Epidural came at 3am. But it only took on my right side! They kept telling me it could take a little while for it to kick in on the other side. Each contraction made my left ovary feel like it was going to explode! Finally an hour later they called the anesthesiologist back in! She adjusted something and left. The medicine kicked in on the other side and it was such a relief!!

My nurse kept coming in saying that LO was in distress or something because her heart rate was getting low and not coming back up. I was SO scared the whole time because I kept thinking I was going to lose her or they were going to have to do an emergency c-section. At one point the nurse came in and put oxygen on me. Yeah, I started freaking out! I just wanted my baby! It was torture! I am pretty sure I prayed more that night then I have my whole entire life it seemed like!

The nurse ended up having to call the Midwife to come in and check on me due to LO's heart rate going low. My Midwife asked if they could put in sensors (or something) into my uterus so that they could monitor the baby closer. She started talking to me about a possibility of a c-section. Well she was beating around the bush about it.. but that is what she was getting to. The Midwife left and my nurse did a check on me to see if I had progressed any since my water broke. She looked down there and said "I can see your baby's head!!" I said "OMG. It's time? It's time to push!!".

I told everyone I couldn't feel anything. I had no idea she was ready to come out. I am assuming that is the reason for her heart rate dipping down so much. Because she was in the birth canal. The nurse ran to get the team ready for my deliver. This was around 6am. I told MIL I feel like I have to have a big bowel movement! She said "you need to push! Where is everyone at!". She ran out to the nurses station and told them I have to push!

At 6:15am everything was set up and the delivery team was in place. I began pushing with my contractions. The nurse had turned down the pitocin due to the heart rate going down, so each contraction was about 5 minutes apart. ALL I WANTED TO DO WAS PUSH! They made me wait and wait for each contraction. The worst part was waiting to push! DH was holding one leg and the nurse holding the other.

At 6:48am Bethany Elizabeth was born!! She weighed almost 8lbs 1oz, measuring 20 1/2 inches long with a head circumference of 13 1/2.

I had 2nd degree tearing and ended up getting stitches done for a half hour! She said she didn't count how many she did. I lost 600 cc's of blood (I think it is called cc's) during the delivery and I kept gushing blood after the delivery. They had to give me 10 pills in my rectum (yeah.. not fun) to try and stop the bleeding. I had a problem with my placenta (which we knew about before delivery) and they had to make sure it was all out so I didn't hemorrhage. This involved the Dr taking her hand and feeling the inside of my uterus, multiple times. It was so uncomfortable!  (Not sure it this is standard procedure for all births or not).

Recovery was pretty rough for me. I was soo weak and dizzy from losing all of the blood. I could barely hold my baby by myself. I could only hold her for a little bit before having to give her to someone else. We were released from the hospital on Sunday evening!

I cried the whole drive home, sitting in the back seat next to Bethany! I cried and cried because I honestly didn't think this day would ever come for me. After having 3 miscarriages I was convinced I couldn't have children!

Bringing her home was one of the happiest days of my life!!!!

  • Sounds like a very eventful labour (manual exploration of the uterus is only done if they suspect retained placental fragments, not standard procedure). Hope your recovery is going well! She's beautiful!

  • Congrats. She is beautiful. Glad you didn't have to have a csection. I had a very similar labor where it felt like my left ovary was going to explode as well. Weird!

  • She is just precious! Congrats and great work!!
  • Congrats! I am so happy for you. She is beautiful! I also had rectal pills to stop bleeding as well as many other painful procedures. They finally took me to the OR and gave me a spinal so that they could clean everything out and stop my bleeding without me being in so much pain. It was awful so I completely understand.
  • Congrats!
