My doctor yelled at me!!

So, I got in trouble when I went to the doctor this past week. He informed me that my blood pressure was high. I admitted that I had wings and fries while watching the heat game the night before. I'm currently 13 weeks and three days and I am a FTM. Ever since I can remember I've always heard women say "eat what you want!" Now grant it I've probably gotten a little out of hand especially since I was a health nut before the baby and worked out 4-5 times a week. But I am just now getting energy back and feeling like myself again to actually want to work out! I can get out more and walk instead of eating and sitting! Needless to say, I can't ignore my cravings!! :(( :(( so my question to other ladies is how do you find a balance? Between your cravings and the right foods?! Help!!

  • Who says eat what you want? Moderation.

My honest, no bullshit answer to your question about balance is that I exert self control. I dunno, eat a vegetable for every fry. I started putting cheese on broccoli.

  • No he didn't literally yell he was just concerned! He took my BP twice and stated it was higher than usual. I don't eat French fries every day but I definitely have leaned more towards eating out or fast food since being pregnant. I don't have any health concerns that would encourage HBP. I am now just a little nervous about what I eat questioning if it's okay when I have cravings because of this one appt. I guess I will just have to eat the not so great foods moderately and watch sodium intake like I use to! Instead of me seeing him in four weeks for check-up he asked me to come back in two weeks just to see my pressure.

  • I don't think the food played a roll or I would be screwed!

  • I have gotten pregnancy induced hypertension with both of my previous pregnancies. It has nothing to do with what I eat and no doctor has ever indicated altering my diet beyond getting extra protein because that helps your body when your pressure is high. If you have hbp already I would recommend getting yourself an at home monitor, your doctor will tell you to get one soon enough I'm sure.

  • I watch what I eat more while I'm pregnant. I typically lose weight at first and then gain some towards the end. I gain about 20 lbs each pregnancy. Things like French fries and my huge craving of pickles affect me more when I'm pregnant, so I limit myself. When I crave pickles, I allow myself to have one. At this point with my m/s and random aversions I eat whatever I can just to get some food in me. Eat in moderation!
  • It sounds to me like you are already trying to control BP so eating what you want during pregnancy is not the best advice in your case. In fact, it's terrible advice as a whole. Eating healthy should be a priority for pregnant women. It's okay to give in to cravings from time to time but cravings should not dictate a pregnancy diet.

Try to keep bad foods to a minimum and look for options that are palatable but which are healthier as well.

  • I don't have high BP consistently this is my first time ever having high BP during any doctor visit in life :) It was just high this one particular visit! I have not been classified as a risk etc. @vrj0522‌ of course he did but I honestly don't recall @jalara48‌
  • @theresat858‌ very true, I believe I was anxious it was my first time that my mother and husband attended my visit at the same time. And oddly was a little overwhelming but I didn't think it would show. That makes a lot of sense with the examples you provided. I look forward to seeing my pressure in two weeks! Thank you ladies for the feedback!
  • Your BP was not high because you had wings and fries one time.
  • I never have high bp but its measured a little high two out of the three last appointments I've had. My bp was normal when they took it after my u/s, so it's from nerves. Like PP said, one meal is not going to change it. Ask them to take your BP at the end of the appointment next time.

  • If one bad meal affected your BP, mine would be off the charts.

  • I agree. One bad meal does not increase BP. Check it at the pharmacy sometime while you're out. And you need two separate high BP readings. So wait til your follow up. Then see what it is.

  • My doctor is more understanding with you eat what you can handle as long as you take your prenatals. He told me he once had a women who he sent to the hospital twice for severe nausa. After that she survived for weeks on nothing but cherry slushes and grilled cheese and her baby was perfectly healthy. Although I'm not advocating this diet. Just giving an extreme example : )

  • It could have been user error. I had one MA that was clearly new at an appointment last year and it took her three tries to get my BP with the equipment she was using. (After the first try its usually not an accurate reading) My BP came out to 150/80. I am usually 100/60....so I would say have it checked again and if it is high again, listen to your Dr because HBP in pregnancy can be scary.

  • Whenever I went to the ob with my first my bp was higher than normal because I had to walk a long way and was usually out of breath by the time I got to where I was going. Is that the case for you? I highly doubt one meal the night before would affect you that much.

    What was the measurement?

One meal will NOT affect your BP like that. Do you have contributing health factors that will lead to high blood pressure (aka hypertension or pregnancy induced hypertension)?

I second this. Unless you are eating fast food every meal and literally sit in a chair all day, never exercising in any way, I don't understand why your BP would be high...so you have hypertension to start?
