I have not, but thanks for the reminder. Most people I know with fairly simple affairs just used legal zoom and then had everything looked at by an attorney.
Ugh we're so far behind on this. We were going to do this before DD1 but didn't get around to it. I think going to a lawyer is the best idea b/c just looking into basic stuff online, it's so complicated and I would really want to know what I'm signing off on.
I am an attorney and I would definitely recommend talking with a lawyer. I've personally seen people run into a lot of trouble trying to do things themselves. A simple will shouldn't cost you too much, and it will be well worth it in the end. Make sure to add a guardianship clause as well.
We need to do it. We consulted with a lawyer and they wanted to charge us out the ass to do it because he wanted to set up a trust for any life insurance the kid(s) would get. The family knows our wishes of who to care for our kid(s), but nothing officially written.

We need to get a second opinion I guess.
Setting up a trust is a good option, but you have to be the one to judge whether they are charging too much or not.
We are in the process of setting up our will, trust and power of attorney. We are using an attorney in my husband's law firm...he said he wasn't going to charge us, but I know that if he doesn't charge us we will do something nice for him since it's a big chunk of money he would be losing out on by doing the work for us.
We will be having ours, as well as Powers of Attorney, done by an estate lawyer. If you do it yourself and make a mistake, it can void the whole thing and your wishes may not be respected if the court has to decide how to deal with your estate. I'm a lawyer myself, but in a different area. I still don't feel comfortable doing it on my own.
We need to do this still. Never got around to it after DD, mainly because we couldn't agree on guardians (we both wanted our own parents, which we are lucky that they would both be great options). DH is a lawyer so he will do it himself, but for something like this he always recommends hiring an attorney because its too important to take a chance on.
We need to find a lawyer to do our will. How do you find one? What do you look for?
I've also been trying to get life insurance over the last two years but am having some difficulty due to my thyroid (growing nodule but it is benign). As soon as it stabilizes, I should be able to get it, as per the underwriter. I want my own policy not through work before I turn 30, but it doesn't look like it will happen.
We are doing this, but after Squish is born. We'll be setting up a trust and POA as well. We're waiting until after because it seems that we actually need our child's name in our will and trust. We did up our life insurance and DH knows my wants in case of a medical emergency.

I would get it all in writing and setup the trusts. As much as you think you can trust your family to respect your wishes and do the right thing by your kids, from my experience even in the closest families things can get very very ugly in matters of death and inheritance, even when there are no assets!

Pretty much any lawyer who does family law stuff should be able to do it for you. Could you ask friends or family for recommendation?<<br> ****blockquote fail*** Most people I'd trust for a recommendation live in a different area/city. I may check with my old boss and then my financial planner/ accountant to see who they'd recommend.

This exactly! I am also a lawyer, and although those programs can be helpful they can't really advise you. It is best to talk to someone who can guide you through your particular state's laws and nuiances and definitely include guardianship language if permitted.
Also as to where to find someone... talk to friends and family and see who they use. You can also contact your local bar association and ask for recommendations. There is typically a referral service available.
