What form of ID (if any) do you take with (for) your LO when you travel out of state? I was thinking I'd take a copy of her birth certificate. What do y'all do?
Well, if you have a passport for her, the rule is a parent signs on the usual signature line, so that way you would be able to prove you're her mother.
Don't know for when you would need this, though, as passports do take some time.
Different but similar - we wouldn't travel with any ID for our kids going between provinces. Maybe just their Health Care Cards in case of emergency. We do have passports for going out of country, though.
Airlines do ask that you travel with a copy of their birth certificate. They don't always ask for it, but I know southwest wouldn't even give us out boarding passes until we showed the birth certificate at the airport. That's the only airline we've had check.
Every airline is different. Some require a certified copy, others a regular copy of the birth certificate is fine, but every time I've asked the airline and brought the identification for DS, I've never once been asked to show it.
@somerandomchick - it's just that you only have one copy of the birth certificate. I keep that in the documents safe at home. A passport is photo ID + mention of the parent. But birth certificate is fine, too. Whatever works for you.

You can get one million copies of a birth certificate, if you need. You just go to the town hall.

You learn something new every day. The paper the consulate gave us said we only could get one additional copy. Maybe that's only for overseas birth certificates....?
I mean, hold on... you could just make a copy of it though. Is that what you mean @maryannespier ? I though you all were talking about "official" copies.

@Asbromle - I meant an "official copy." When we got LOs birth certificate we paid an extra $5 and got a second copy.
Edit - sorry, I realized after I quoted this part that the question was directed at @maryannespier.
We got state ID's for both kids at 3 months old. It's easy at the DMV.
We did it because our attempts to fly with DD have been met with weirdness & I don't feel comfortable carrying copies of an important document around.
@PrimRoseMama - This is a new idea to me! I've never heard of it, but apparently my state does it, also. It seems like a good idea. How do you handle the picture and weight updates on a child ID?
Have never taken anything with us and DS1 has flown quite a bit. We almost always fly United so I guess that's why I didn't realize any airlines would ask for the birth cert. good to know just in case!
We just flew with DD and we only needed ID for the adults, none of the children. (This was a domestic flight. When we took DS1 to Japan we had to get him a passport.)
ETA: To clarify, we traveled with official copies of all 3 of their birth certificates, but no one asked to see them.
Not sure about everywhere else, but in Maine all you need to do is go to town hall, sign a form, and give them money. You can get as many copies as you'd like but you have to pay for them. They are all official copies, though.
In the past I've traveled with the BC, but I've never needed it.
We're just going to get DD a passport so we don't have to deal with the birth certificate in the future. (Plus we travel enough that it's probably worth getting one when we're not actively planning a trip).
