High-Risk Pregnancy

Another scan? Short femur/humerus bones?

Is it normal to have a growth scan not even a week before your c-section date?! I am high risk due to having uterine didelphys (2 uterine horns and full septum.. making 2 cervix and vaginas). This is baby #3 for us, the first 2 pregnancies went amazing and I've never had an issue besides being anemic. I had a scan at 28 weeks and then 34 weeks. I am now 36 weeks and my doctors office just called to tell me to make an appointment with a different place to have another growth scan. At the 28 week scan the perinatal doc noted that baby had small femur and humerus bones, they were measuring pretty small. I do not remember the exact % they said but it was low... maybe 5th percentile or close to that. Anyways, I went in at 34 weeks and they remeasured and checked him over. Again, small arm/leg bones BUT they had grown appropriately so the perinatal doc said we would not need another scan and it was most likely just because I am short (5'1" and normally 90 lb). So, we have a short baby. Alright! Now, my doctor is wanting another perinatal appointment at a different location... I called and asked about it but the doctor was busy and the nurse wouldn't tell me WHY I was going, just that it was for a growth scan. New perinatal place couldn't get me in until April 9th and my c-section is early morning on the 15th. I guess I'm just concerned as to why they want another scan at the last minute when the last perinatal said I wouldn't need another scan and everything was fine =\ My doctor didn't mention it when I was at my appointment just 2 days ago either.

  • I have never had this but let us know. I am curious and hope all is ok! The drs are prob just taking precautions.

  • My only guess as to why they would have an ultrasound so close to your c-section might be if they're concerned about something that would require an immediate team on hand or specialist at the time of the birth. Otherwise, why not wait until baby gets here? I agree that more than likely you jut have a short baby. I'd talk to the ob/gyn again to see if the ultrasound is absolutely necessary.
  • Yeah, that was the reason I was concerned. My previous perinatal doc did not seem worried and suggested no more scans... my OB never spoke to me about anything my perinatal doc sent her so I have no idea what's going on in her mind. Then, she requested I make an appointment for another scan... with a new perinatal. My next OB appointment is Tuesday so I will talk to her then about it and see if she is just being overly cautious or if there is something beyond that and no one is talking to me.
  • I'd say if the perinatologist wasn't worried than push your doc more. Our baby also has short femurs (5-15th%ile, depending on the scan) but they've been growing and no one seems too worried. The things they think of with this are chromosomal abnormalities and skeletal dysplasias, but with normal 1st and 2nd tri testing and normal anatomy/growth otherwise this is very unusual. I think LO is likely just built like his brother who at 2.5yo is in 3T shirts and 18-24 month pants. I am delivering at a major academic medical center though, so if there is a need for specialty care we have it right there. I'd push your doc a little more and ask about the benefits of yet another scan.
