Yogi mamas

I know some of you lovely ladies are yogis, dedicated or casual, and I want to chat.

I just started a home practice almost 2 weeks ago. I'm starting out really slow and simple, at least 10 minutes a day, once or twice a day, following along with some youtube videos. I have never taken an official yoga class, but I was a dancer for 11 years, so I know enough basics about stretching and joint/muscle safety, that I don't think I'll injure myself ;) But I want to know about everyone else's experience.

How long have you practiced?
How often do you practice?
Do you take a class or practice at home or both?
What discipline do you prefer (I don't know if that's the right terminology)?
Do you plan to practice with your LO as they get older, or is this something set aside for "me time"?

I'm really excited and a little obsessed right now, so feel free to give as many details as you want :)

Re: Yogi mamas

  • Ah! Welcome to the club (cult!?). Yoga has seriously been life changing for me. I work in a very high stress/intense environment and its totally an escape for me. I have only been practicing consistently for about 2 years. Now I always buy packages and take classes at a studio but when I was pregnant I did a lot of yoga at home, I bought a few DVDs. I would love to do a mommy and me with DS but right now this is a great way for me to just unwind and forget about everything. I dont love hot (bikram) yoga  but Ill still do it if thats the only class time that works for me. When I do regular vinyasa flow I sometimes think its easy then I wake up the next day sore, its crazy. I am good at most poses but cant for the life of me do a headstand and probably never will. Thats ok with me tho!  Enjoy!

How long have you practiced? 4 1/2 years
How often do you practice? I take class once a week, and I meditate most mornings
Do you take a class or practice at home or both? I take class and occasionally practice at home - more so in the summer
What discipline do you prefer (I don't know if that's the right terminology)? I practice hot power yoga which is vinyasa (flow) not to be confused with bikram.
Do you plan to practice with your LO as they get older, or is this something set aside for "me time"? I would love to do yoga with DS if he was interested but in addition to my own practice. Also, fun Drea fact - I was trained and taught kids yoga for a year. :-)

Yoga has also changed my life. I was very anxiety-ridden/high strung before finding my practice. It helps me to be more mindful and aware of what's going on in my mind and body.

    Namaste ;-)

  • I'm a sporadic yogi. When I'm not pregnant, I do cirque du soleil style pole dancing, and my instructor likes to add in yoga for warm-up and flexibility. Sometimes she has yoga only classes that I go to if I'm available that day, but I'm definitely not consistent with it.

Btw, I'm not a stripper, I promise! Haha

I am beyond interested in doing something like that! In addition to yoga, and it would have to be in a few years when I have weaned, etc. That is so cool.

  • Sporadic here as well, but so great for you nonetheless! One thing I've noted to many people is I've found taking a class to be a very different yoga experience than doing it at home. For me at least, it truly becomes more about my practice and breathing. Perhaps it's a group think thing. ;)

  • @nikkisun54 I totally get that. I love taking class because everyone's energy is shared. I love "OM-ing" as a group too. It's beautiful!

  • I've been practicing for several years, tho not hard core. I started with the yogamazing podcasts, then went to some classes. I prefer to go to the studio, but if it means not practicing I'd try to of some at home. I did lots of prenatal. And even took ds to baby and me yoga during his first year. I'll definitely continue to do yoga with him. And if he's interested eventually, there's a little yogis class at my studio. My new thing I'm into is aerial yoga, so much fun!

  • How long have you practiced? 7 or 8 years

How often do you practice? I had a twice daily practice for years, morning and night. Now I manage about 1-3 times a week.

Do you take a class or practice at home or both? I like taking classes but I haven't taken a class since somewhere in second trimester with DD. I have had a home practice fairly regularly for about five years now.

What discipline do you prefer (I don't know if that's the right terminology)? I practice Iyengar Yoga. Right now my routine is based off of the instruction in the book Light on Yoga. Light on Yoga is a great book for beginners. I have also enjoyed all of the Shiva Rea videos that I have tried.

I studied with a professional instructor for over two years before I attempted a home practice. She was taught by Rodney Yee (before the marriage scandal, back when he was still cool) and she did workshops all over the world. She traveled to India to study at the Iyengar institute there and is a certified Iyengar instructor.

Do you plan to practice with your LO as they get older, or is this something set aside for "me time"? Both! DH and I also practice together when we can.

  • I try to get get to class once or twice a week, hot yoga. Vinyasa flow like Drea said. It's me time. It will always be time I think.
  • I have a standing yoga date on Mondays at 7:30pm. I would like to go more, but it's unrealistic. I would rather stick with one day that I know I can commit to, than be frustrated about not being able to go more and give up all together.

Before pregnancy, I used to go 4-6 days a week. I have always gone to the CorePower Yoga studios. It's vinyasa flow. I have never practiced yoga alone because my mind is too busy and I would get distracted. Listening to someone else guide helps me focus. :)

  • I've been practicing on and off for about 8 years. Before marriage, I went to three 90 minute sessions a week and then became less frequent as time went on. I take one class of vinyasa flow a week now and love it! There is something about being away from home (I'm a SAHM) and in a serene environment that really benefits me. I am very picky about the studio, though, and avoid classes that are too jam packed (no personal space) or classes that don't make me sweat. You should try a few different classes/teachers to see which one you like. Namaste! :)
