Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Intro and question: When Did LO start sleeping 2-3 hour stretches?

Before my question just a quick intro: I'm AlexaWinston and I have been a routine bumpie everyday since July on the March14 board. Just had my LO three days ago and am excited to freqent the parenting board now for all the great advice!

Please help! Maybe I am jumping the gun as DD is only 3 days old, but I have not gotten any sleep over the last 48 hours and the thought of gearing up for it again tonight has me just frazzled. LO sleeps ALL DAY LONG, but I know newborns have their own schedules so I let her. However, at night she is so fussy and won't go down in her PNP, RNP, my chest or anything. I am nursing on demand and usually offer the boob everytime she starts fussing. Last night I cluster feed constantly from 10-230 and she still would not go down after. I can sqeeze my nipple and see milk coming out and Dr. says her weight is good, so I believe she is getting feed. I think just like wants soothed. I don't mind nursing her all night if she wants/needs it, but I need to get her to sleep afterword. Am I jumping the gun and she will start sleeping longer stretches here soon? or any other advice would be much appriciated!

Re: Intro and question: When Did LO start sleeping 2-3 hour stretches?

  • Have you tried waking her up so that she'll maybe feed for a bit longer?  All she really should be doing right now is eating, sleeping, and pooping... Day and night.  Are you swaddling her at all? I would think you could expect her to already be sleeping 2-3 hour stretches.

  • DS has been doing 2-3 hours since day one. I typically am in the camp of waking up babies during the day. We wake DS up every 3 hours during the day to eat from the start of a feeding. If DS won't sleep and is really fussy typically he's hungry so we always try that or a diaper change.

  • Yeah your jumping the gun.  That is all my LO did for weeks maybe i would say at least 2 weeks.  my LO is now 10 weeks old he started the 6-7 hour stretches at about 7-8 weeks or so And the 2-3 hours i would say 1-3 weeks, every baby is different.  My LO also cluster fed every fricken night from like 8-11pm and he hasn't done that for 3 weeks or so now.  So once he reached 2 months of age he quit the cluster feeding.  Hang in there momma, it will get better and your doing everything right.
What Jessib10 said you should try swaddling your LO at night.  I did the halo sleep sacks with my LO but left his arms out cause he fought so bad to get his arms out, it seemed to help.
  • I don't think I got more than an hour and a half stretch until he was a week or so?

At 20 weeks now, some nights are actually worse than the NB phase.

Have you tried side-lying nursing? That's the only way I could manage to get any sleep those first couple weeks.
  • My advice is wake her up during the day after about 2.5 hours for diaper changes, feeds, etc. and let her sleep as long as she wants starting at whatever you designate as "bedtime". That will get her to sort out her days and nights. And it will happen fast! Most kids do by about two weeks old. Also make sure you're napping some during the day, too. It'll help keep you sane. :)

Agree with waking to feed every 2-3 during the day. Make sure she stays awake to take both sides - diaper change in the middle, strip to diaper etc. If she falls asleep after its ok. At night you can usually let them go 4 hours initially, but check with your pediatrician.

It's normal to have night and day reversed initially. During the day open blinds, turn on lights, make normal household noises. In the evening turn everything down. This will help her get swapped around, but it will take time, and before she sleeps longer at night she'll probably just start waking every 2-3 around the clock for a bit.

As far as soothing a fussy baby, I highly recommend you read Happiest Baby on the Block. That book was a huge lifesaver for us.

    THIS :-)
You can also get a DVD based on the principles of Happiest Baby.  As I recall, it was about 1/2 hour long, but goes through five ways to soothe a baby thoroughly.  Check your local library for it.
Things will get better. Both of my daughters (youngest is 9 weeks now) were fussy night owls for the first week or so.  By the beginning of the second week even I saw changes in sleeping patterns. Try your best to get some rest, or at least some "me" time, whenever LO is napping.

  • My LO started at about 5 or 6 days. Before that every night I  spent in the living room trying to placate her while daddy rested for work. She sleeps for 2-3 hours all day and night since then. Our hospital has the DVD based on the principles of Happiest Baby, and had us watch it while I recovered from delivery. Daddy watched it with me and is really good at using the techniques it suggests, it really helped a lot.
  • This has already been said by PPs, but I would definitely echo the idea of waking baby during the day to eat. Do not let her go more than 3 hours between feeds during the day. Wake her up. I firmly believe this is what helped our LO sort out nights and days so quickly!

Good luck! You can do this!

  • As soon as we got home from the hospital (3days old) we had to wake him for his feedings! Once we accidentally went 4 1/2hours.. Again that was once and it's because we fell asleep SO and I. But recently he started to wake up at 2hours... But every baby is different.

  • OOOOH how I feel your pain! MY little guy is now 3 months but reading your description but me right back to when he was super new!

hang in there, it gets better. They sometimes get their days and nights mixed up. Mine also wanted to constantly be on the boob... it's a comfort thing for the baby. try a pacifier. I hated the idea at first but i started to get super sore and letting him just hang out and nurse for hours was not a good idea, I needed SLEEP!!! not going to lie there were many nights that baby slept on me. He now only takes his pacifier when he sleeps. my little guy would not take the pacifier from me at first, only his daddy. Hopefully your significant other is helping you out so you can sleep.
