Variations of Gabriel

What do you think of these variations of Gabriel?

1. Gavrik (Russian dim. variation)

2. Gavril (also Russian)

3. Gavriel (Hebrew)

I am the person that was here last week or so and I really like the names Noak (Swedish for Noah) and Tabor. However, my husband likes the name Ny.croft, (which is just a name that he changed after being inspired by the character Mycroft).

Now, I haven't told him these new names yet, but I really like them. However, he is tough and will probably say something again about "How about Scary Brandon?" Haha! (He has a 200 IQ supposedly so I don't quite know what to think of that. :-D )

  • Gavrik and Gavriel are cool. Nycroft is completely awful. Please no.

    i love Gabriel.

not a fan of the variations.

  • Would all of these be said with a long a sound like Gabriel?
  • I love Gavriel. We debated it briefly because it's awesome, but ultimately settled for Gabriel because it's more well known.

I can't speak for the others, but Gavriel is pronounced gah-VREE-el, vs Gabriel sounding like Gay-bree-uhl.

  • Yes, I do believe that they are all pronounced differently than Gabriel. ( ^ correct pronunciation is as CatahoulaMom put it in the above comment. ^)

    I second this.
  • What's wrong with Gabriel? I definitely prefer it to the above variations. If I had to pick one of the three, though, I'd pick Gavrial. Although I think you're going to get a lot of people calling him Gabriel. If you're OK with that?

And tell him to stop trying to make Nycoft happen. It's not going to happen.

  • Gabriel
while the variations are real names. gavriel will constantly by correcting his name
  • Yes, in the Hebrew, Gabriel is Gavriel. In Latin(?), I think it was Gabriel. I would consider the Hebrew to technically be the original, but I guess the other version (Gabriel) could also be considered by some to be the original.

  • Yes, I think that technically the Biblical Hebrew would be the oldest....but somewhere in the picture the Biblical Latin comes into play and makes it Gabriel. But....I'm not exactly sure when that would have happened! It could have quite a while afterwards, yet, it's probably old or ancient enough that people still considered that one of the oldest versions, too. Interesting! I like Gavriel better since it is the original and it isn't as well-known, but they are both nice names.

  • (Oh, I think the Latin was actually centuries later, though.)

  • But, alas....my husband did not like these names, either, anyway. I think it would be a great start if I can at least get him to move Nycroft to the middle name. He loves that name something fierce right now.
