childbirth/ prenatal classes

Hello- my husband and I are going to be first time parents and were interested in taking some childbirth/ prenatal classes. We plan to deliver at Methodist in St. Louis Park, and they recommend the AMMA classes. However, when I looked, I was surprised at how expensive they were ($300-$500). Does anyone have suggestions for something a little cheaper? Not taking the classes is not an option, regardless of price. Was just hoping to find something a little less expensive!

Re: childbirth/ prenatal classes

  • Check with your insurance, I know that some will reimburse all or part of the cost of some of the AMMA classes. I would also ask at your OB office, ours had a list of classes.

  • I was looking at Blooma's website. They have reasonably priced classes. And lots of other workshops and groups for women , it looks nice!
  • Which classes were you hoping to take at Amma? We did 4 (an all day childbirth one, newborn care, infant CPR, and breastfeeding) and saw some overlap in the classes and looking back would have preferred to just take an all in one prep course and call it a day. It's a little bit cheaper that way too.
  • We took classes through Farview. 80 bucks total for birth class, breastfeeding, carseats and infant care. GL!

  • Google "The Childbirth Collective," they have lots of free classes (they call them Parent Topic Nights, I think), both in Minneapolis and Saint Paul. Perhaps some of them will meet your needs.
  • We did our classes through Amma.  Because of the amount of research I had done beforehand I think we could have skipped one or two of our four classes, but it was good for DH to hear much of the info firsthand.
