April 2014 Moms

Out and about!

How long are you waiting to take your new LO out to public places? i.e. Walking around the mall, shopping, out to restaurant with family, etc.

Will your baby be a social butterfly right away?

  • We went to eat on the way home from the hospital with both of mine. I have two other kids I don't have the option to stay in.
  • I think once I start feeling like going out, we will go out.
  • Prettymuch right away. As soon as I feel up for it.
  • It wouldn't surprise me if we went somewhere on the way home from the hospital.

With my second I was running to Target the day I came home from the hospital.

  • It has been almost two weeks and we haven't gone on any outings other than the dr. I think bc she was born early and small I'm being extra precautious.
  • As soon as I feel up to it - mothers day is only 12 days after my due date and right now We are planning on going to the family brunch that my Grandpa hosts every year. Over an hour away from home. As well as a wedding 3 and 1/2 weeks after EDD.

  • I'm always on the move so while I have no plans to take her out immediately after she's born, I wouldn't be surprised if it happened sooner rather than later.
  • The day we came home from the hospital we stopped by Walmart and went out to dinner. I went for walks (sometimes pretty short) almost daily the first few weeks. I would like to start taking DS1 to his activities again by two weeks this time as long as I'm feeling well and the weather is good. DS2 will stay in a sling or carrier the whole time so nobody else touches him though.

  • Yeah it will depend more on when I feel up to it than the baby. With baby wearing, though, it doesn't feel like a big deal to take the baby out. They stay so close and people don't generally notice or mess with them.

  • Totally depends on how I feel. I'm doing a home birth, so there won't even be a "coming him from the hospital" trip.

  • Whenever I feel good enough. With DD I was out of the house with her during the first week.
  • Dd stayed in for two weeks after she was born. I doubt I'll be able to do that this time since dh has to work more this time. Hopefully I heal as well as I did with dd. If we do go out defiantly no touching but I will be stocked with hand sanitizer for myself and dd. I worry more on just picking up more germs while out.
  • I anticipate we'll have him out quite quickly. With DD, we were out eating lunch and running errands 48 hours after being discharged from the hospital. Babywearing eliminates nearly all of unwanted stranger touching, and if we went out to eat, we just kept her in her car seat and covered.

We'll also have DD to think of this time around so we'll quickly have her brother hanging at the park and story time and all of those good things she does on the regular.

  • In my culture, we stay in for 40 days. Idk how I will do.
  • It really depends how I am feeling. I was out of the house and walked the mall 10 days after getting released with DD#1. This time has been a little worse recovery wise, so I'm thinking it might take us a little longer. Hoping to make it to Easter brunch with my family though.

    Same here...screw my culture.

  • I can't stay home for very long without going insane. Baby and I will be out of the house as soon as I feel physically capable of leaving.
  • As soon as I am up for it, but more than likely not alone. If DH is at work, I will bring my mom with me... just to have that extra backup while I am adjusting to being a new mom.

  • As soon as I'll be able to (relatively) comfortably walk around this baby and I are taking off. Stroller walks along the bike path, here I come (if spring cooperates)!

  • This is one of my anxieties. I want to go back to normal life as soon as I feel up to it (healed and whatnot) but I personally am too shy to nurse in public and I also don't want my baby to start screaming and all the people in the world to stare and judge. So we'll see if I ever leave the house again..

Before I was fully comfortable NIPing, I nursed in the car a lot! We'd leave the house the minute I finished nursing DD, go out to eat, nurse in the car, then run an errand. Also, the Nordstrom Ladies' Lounge has a lovely area to nurse in so we walked around the mall a lot for a change of scenery early on!

  • After I had each of my kids I was in a "leave me alone" type of mood. Unless it was close family/friend coming by to help me with something, I just was not in the mood for being around people.

There's nothing wrong with either one, many of my friends were ready to be up and going right away. Personally I'm just not that way, between my mom, my MIL, and my SIL, my two other children will be able to have lots of outside activity time while I rest.

  • I think it's going to depend on the location for me. We go to a diner for breakfast every weekend and I think I'd be comfortable taking her there as soon as I heal. Nobody would bother us there.
  • As soon as I'm up to it. With DS1, we were walking the mall at 1 week old.

  • I'm a "go go go" person, so I am guessing that staying at home won't be something I'll be doing a lot of....lol

This probably goes in stupid questions thread, but could you baby wear and go out to eat? Or did you need to bring in the car seat because it was hard to baby wear and eat at the table?

You definitely can babywear at the table, but I always found it cumbersome. If she started fussing in the car seat, we'd just get her out and hold her.

  • My husband's graduation is about 2 1/2 weeks after her due date. That will probably be the first time we go out. I'm hoping she doesn't come late. Not sure why, I just feel like I would be more comfortable if she's a little older!
