How did your labor begin?

Re: How did your labor begin?

  • With both kids, breath-taking, extremely painful, contractions began that woke me in the middle of the night from a dead sleep. I had several days of inconsistent, not painful contractions before both as well.

After timing for over an hour, I knew it was time to go to the hospital as they were less than 3 minutes apart and lasted for 60-90 seconds.

After admission, I got an epidural, had my water broken and slept for about 9 hours before pushing about 3 times. With both kids. :)

  • Lol I can only hope. My back is killing me but no real contractions. I have also been on the toilet all day sorry for the TMI. I wish my water would just break so I would know.
  • My contractions woke me up. It was midnight.

  • WHY?! What's happening?????

I had weird, painful but not in a consistent pattern contractions all day on the Saturday. from the time I woke up. Midwife came to our house to check me around noon and said I was dilating (can't remember how much... I've forgotten everything!) and that it would happen soon. So we went on a big dog walk and made dinner, then went on another walk that evening, then tried to go to bed. I tossed and turned, then finally around midnight timed the contractions and they were close enough together to count as active labour :)

  • Lots of contractions both times. I went to the hospital because they were so consistent but not painful, just uncomfortable. I was dilated far enough to be admitted, 5-6 cm I think, when we got to the hospital. The dr had to break my water both times.

  • My water broke both times without any contractions.  With DS, contractions started a couple hours later, with DD the contractions never started on their own.

  • My water started leaking. I wasn't sure if it was my water leaking or not. Forty-five minutes later, it broke. Then the contractions started about a half an hour later. So add me to the 10% water breaking no pain camp.

  • With DD1 I woke up and was having pretty strong period-like cramps, had my weekly OB appt at 9am and he said I was having contractions 5 mins apart and sent me to hospital. Had DD1 19 hours later.

DD2 I was having painful contractions 8-10 minutes a part for almost 36 hours! Finally went to L&D when they were 5 mins apart, but they told me they weren't happening close enough together on the monitor and and sent me home sleep-deprived and in pain. I came back 2 hours later in the worst pain of my life and was already at 7cm, ready to push in less than 2 hours.

  • With J. I woke up in the morning and immediately had contractions and lost my MP. Contractions continually got longer, stronger, and closer together until he was born late that night.

With A., I again got up for the day and had contractions. But they weren't hard to deal with and were sporadic. So I wasn't sure it was the real deal. Until mid-afternoon when I had a back labor contraction. And I realized that the switch to back labor was when things got really serious with J. I told DH "this is it!" and 2 hours later we were holding A.

With S., my water broke. And I was so excited. But I had only sporadic contractions (maybe 7 or 8 over the next 24 hours). I waited. And I again had a handful of contractions over the next day. Finally, 2 days after my water broke, contractions started. They were 30 seconds long maximum and 10 minutes apart. I was sleeping between them. When I finally woke up and told DH that I needed to change positions I figured things were getting serious.

Not to scare you, but yeah...3 contractions after I realized it was the real deal I was holding S. Thankfully the MW arrived within minutes of his birth.

That bit of TMI was actually the first sign both times. The same thing happened to me the day before my water broke with both pregnancies. Then in the very early stages it felt more like period cramps than actual contractions.

With the last one, I just felt off all day. I started getting real deal contractions, but spaced out, around 4pm. My water broke around 12:30am and by the time we got to the hospital (1-1:30) I was 6cm. She was born at 4:30am

  • Another pitocin induced labor. :)
  • With a scalpel I assume...I wasn't really paying attention, the drugs were gooooood.
  • I started having mild contractions as I was falling asleep. They lasted 3 days. On the morning of the fourth day my midwife broke my water and DS was born a few hours later. 88 hours from beginning to end with no sleep. It didn't hurt as bad as I thought it would, but I was so tired I was a mess.

  • Cervidil and pitocin; another inductee here. Oh and then it really started when my water broke while walking by the nurses station in the hospital. That was an awesome mess for them to clean up I'm sure lol.

    good luck!

    All this!

OMG! Baby Luke on his way?
  • I was putting off going to bed and feeling weird.  Then I did my relaxation meditation I was using to help with birth and right when I finished I had a strong contraction.  I thought I might as well try to get some sleep and went to bed at around 2am.  I slept a bit and woke up with each contraction until 5am when I woke up to one that made me want to get up and run outside, haha.  That's the only way I can describe it.  That was the start of active labour.
  • I lost the mucus plug the night before. I also went to the bathroom a lot. When I woke up the next morning I was having what I thought were contractions but they didn't really hurt. Called my doc and she said start timing them. I downloaded a contraction timer app (it was amazing) and once they got to my docs recs we headed to the hospital.
  • My water broke as I was sleeping on the couch on a Friday night, "watching" DH play his new video game. I didn't have contractions until about 90 minutes after my water broke.
  • water broke first for me too. well, it was a "slow leak" lol & i went to the hospital, they tested it, & it was amniotic fluid so i was admitted. no contractions or anything for hours (at least 6, can't remember exactly) & i finally agreed to pitocin. i did end up having back labor & your other symptoms so yes, i think you're in the final countdown.  good luck!
  • Eeeeee... I can't take the suspense!

  • Okay, @andrewsgal - I went back into my blog and found THIS post about "signs you might be in labor" and had the EXACT same... um, issues as you are having right now. Nolan was born the next day :)

DD1 and 2 both started with contractions.  I was 4 days early with both and delivered both two days later.
DD3: My water broke on my way back from the airport (dropping my DH off for a work trip)  I was 37 weeks.  She was my three hour labor and delivery.

I woke up at 345am feeling like I was going to be sick. I sat in front of the toilet waiting for it to happen and feeling hot, sweaty, shaky and just off. I tried going back to bed but I was uncomfortable and restless so I took a long hot shower. I was having some mild contractions, like BH but a little stronger. I didn't think anything of it because I'd been having similar contractions all week.

After my shower I finally got sick and felt better. I went and laid back in bed and then I jumped up and ran to the bathroom because my water had just broken. Contractions started within minutes.

Went to the hospital at 9am, labored all day and had DD at 109am the next morning.

Eta. Forgot to say good luck!
