Similac for Supplementation?

I have realized that I'm not producing as much milk for DS as I did with DD. It will become a problem when I head back to work in two weeks. :( I anticipate DS will get 1 bottle of formula M-F until summer starts.

So I ventured down the formula aisle today. I was planning on getting Earth's Best as it was recommended to me. Then someone recommended Similac Organic. As I was comparing ingredients - no small feat - I noticed Similac for Supplementation and Similac Sensitive. DS is extremely gassy - so I went ahead and bought the sensitive. But now I'm wondering if I should have gotten the Supplementation one.

Anyone have experience with it?

Re: Similac for Supplementation?

  • I saw this too and they also sent samples. My pedi recommended regular similAc as a starting point though. If there ended up being a reflux issue like dd had we would switch to the similac sensitive for fussiness/gas. I don't know much about the supplement one though so I'm interested to hear what others say!

  • I have been using it for LO since the weekend she came home, but she has been super gassy lately. Arches her back, cries out, and farts sooo much mostly at night. I switched to sensitive today (I have a ton of similac samples that were mailed to me) to see if it makes a difference. It's too early to say if it is making a difference or not.

  • Honestly, Similac for Supplementation is just a marketing ploy.

I thought this too...but they claim there are more prebiotics than any other.

  • Similac sensitive has less lactose than regular similac. So if you're trying to limit dairy, go with that, otherwise regular is probably fine.
  • Our son has reflux and the feeding specialist really didn't think using anything other than the regular formula made a difference. But we mix it with breast milk so maybe that makes a difference

Should I mix it 50/50? Or start 75bm/25f?

  • @carrieandtim‌ Oh I wouldnt mix anything without speaking to your dr. We have a feeding specialist because of his many feeding issues. We also mix in rice cereal.
  • Just curious what made you go with the similac brand? My hospital uses enfamil so I was planning on buying that if that's what she starts out with. But is there a difference between the 2 brands?

@bingbongsmama‌ all formula must meet the same nutritional standards but ingredients may vary. Don't quote me but I believe the major difference between Similac advanced and Enfamil premium is one uses strictly whey protein and the other contains Caesin and whey. The differences are things like that and some babies may react differently to different formula. When we supplemented we used Kirkland Brand. Same ingredients and 1/2 the price.

Never heard of Caesin but is there a benefit to Caesin VS. just whey?

ETA: just read an interesting article. Looks like enfamil is most closest to the make up of breast milk with 60% whey 40% Caesin. Similac is 80/40. Don't know if it makes a huge difference though
  • We went with our pedi's rec because they provided lots of big samples until we found what worked for Dd. Now we are doing the same with DS. They gave the equivalent of over $100 in sample containers!
  • We are using similac for supplementation mixed in bottles with breast milk. We literally had a bunch of samples and tried that one first since we were in fact "supplementing". Pedi is cool with it and baby seems to do well. Pedi said that it didn't matter much which formula u used as long as it didn't cause too much gas (which it's not) and we were instructed not to keep changing formulas because if baby developed an allergy it would be hard to determine which one was causing it.
