What shoes does your LO weat?

Our DD began walking a little before her 1st birthday. Though she walks independently I'm not sure what type of shoes I should put on her. The hard bottoms seem so stiff but she slips with the soft bottoms. What type of shoes do you put your walking lo?

  • Stride rite or Pediped. Make sure you get LO fitted, if there's a retailer by you go there or print the size sheet from home if there isn't. Then I buy online and save $.

  • We did stride rite for his first pair once he started walking. I had no idea where to begin for sizing, so that's where we started. It's been pretty much Target ever since.
  • We love our stride rite shoes. They have "hard" soles but are still super flexible which is nice when they have just learned to walk. I think the biggest thing is to make sure they fit properly. The first pair we just bought at walmart and I followed the measuring instructions on the shoe box. Not a good plan. I measured her at a 3, and we couldn't figure out why she seemed to stumble so much in shoes. Two weeks later we took her to stride rite and she measured a 4.5 , and magically no longer stumbled when she was in properly fitted shoes ( and all the sudden wanted her shoes on ALL the time where before it was a battle to get shoes on her to go outside).
  • We have done Stride Rite since DD started cruising around holding onto furniture.  Now that she's walking we put shoes on anytime we go somewhere but I just let her roam the house in socks with grippies on the bottoms or barefoot if it's not cold.  Definitely go get LO fitted and if you have the funds buy a pair of the size they're in and a pair of the next size up (check the clearance section!!).  Try to remember to check the sizing every now and then to see when you need to switch.  Stride Rite shoes have a removable insert that you pull out and hold up to LO's foot to see how close they are to the next size.

Stride Rite are the best and they have stage 1,2 and 3 walkers.
  • Stride Rite's "Step 2" shoes. They have enough support for walking but are great for this age (my DD is almost 15 months) because of the way the toe turns up, it stops them from stumbling.

  • Our favorite pair is Stride-Rite. I got them at a used kids store and they are amazing!

  • Yep. stride right, step 2. I also like Osh Kosh. I have some Toms, but haven't tried them, yet. They probably won't fit until summer or fall.
  • We have been buying Stride Rite Step 2 shoes since he started walking. We have a Stride Rite outlet near us and they measure feet.  I think it's important to have them correctly measured.... DS has fat feet and needs Wide shoes.  Our friends let us borrow her son's shoes but even though the size is correct, they didn't fit b/c they weren't wide.  DS has been walking for 3 months.

  • We also do Stride Rite and Pedipeds. I also love the Hanna Andersson moccasins for when I know we're not going to be walking outside.

    This.

Also, my DD has wide feet and Pediped runs a tinsy bit small so instead of wearing a size to a size and a half bigger than the actual measure of her foot, she has to have a full two sizes larger to get the thumbs width in front and the pinky width in back that you look for when you buy shoes for your tot. So, a professional measurement and trying on an actual pair are a must.

The upside is that pediped are great about returns if the shoes do not fit right.

  • Stride Rite. As it gets warmer though I have a variety of sandals and flats for her from different places.

  • My son wears his Freshly Picked Moccasins a lot. They are soft shoes but very durable. He has some Air Jordan's as well but he's not a fan of hard bottom shoes.
  • Great options! Thank you so much ladies!!!

  • Stride Rite SRTs were the first pair of walkers DD used at 13 months.  Now she is 20 months and I still have her in super flexible-soled shoes.  Currently she is wearing Momo-baby or something like that.  But those are good for a wide foot.  Definitely get her fitted, regardless!

I really liked Pediped shoes for my daughter when she turned 1 years old.  I also like Keen sandals for summer.  But she got some Hello Kitty Stride Rite shoes for Christmas and those are really cool.
