How Late Would You Travel?

I know my posts have all be about travel lately, but bear with me. It's just now getting warm and it is ALL I can think about. I need to get to the ocean...

Anyway, we have a beach trip planned for June 20th. It is the absolute earliest we could go without taking DS out of school and for DH to get the time off. I am technically due Aug 3rd (RCS likely for July 30th) So, I will be 35 weeks. We would be driving (8 hours, lots of stops) and once we get there, just sitting around in the condo, on the beach, or in the pool. Some precautions I am planning... We will take our carseat and hospital/baby bag and I will find a good hospital nearby just in case. Also, I don't have to have an RCS, I am just electing to. If he decides to come on his own before then and has no complications, I will have him vaginally.

Would you do it?

Re: How Late Would You Travel?

  • Yes. As long as your prepared and you take stops to keep the blood flowing....why not? Every mama deserves a break before a big life change. I wish I had the money to do something. I would take anything at this point. Do it!
  • Loading the player...
  • I would go Its a longer drive, but with stops is fine. You're going to be relaxing and lounging all week. I see no difference with that vs. being at home hanging out.

  • I was on bedrest at that point with DS, so part of me wants to yell "YES." I was miserable.

But, I'm thinking the heat and travel may be a little much at that point if I was a normal pregnant woman. ;)

  • I would do it.  I've debated going to visit my family (about 4 hours away from us) around the time I'm due, and have checked out the hospital to ensure everything would be fine, etc.
  • I've already informed DH that we will be going on a mini vaca in June before baby girl gets here so I'm all for going!

  • Yes, I'd go. I may be going to Chicago for work at 35-36 weeks.

Just make sure you stop often to walk around, the last think you need is a blood clot. Maybe consider some compression stockings as well.

    Most definitely

ETA: I plan on flying (between DC and Boston) up until 36-38 weeks.

  • Absolutely - go and have fun!

  • Last time my doctor had no issue until 36 weeks, I had my sisters wedding 5 hours away at 34 weeks and the drive was very uncomfortable for me. I don't have any plans to go away after Memorial Day this time (33weeks).

Yeah. You're not even flying so just be sensible and I see no problem. Have fun!

  • I'll be the other voice in this discussion. One of the midwives told me at the beginning of this pregnancy no travel when I have 8 weeks left. I know someone who went on vacation last summer at like 33 weeks and went into labor. She ended up having the baby there and having to stay in hotels/hospital while he was in the NICU for a few weeks. She was only about 4 hours from home. So...if you feel strongly about going and have your doctor's approval, do it...just be prepared in case something happens and you can't make it home.

  • If my doctor was okay with it, then probably.
  • My OB told me at the beginning to not plan on traveling more than an hour outside of our metro area during my third trimester. That being said, I think we are planning a trip to Kansas City to see my parents and my hometown when I am technically 29 weeks as long as I'm not having any complications then. (we can cancel on my parents last minute if we have to and it's only a 4 1/2 hour drive).

If you and your OB felt comfortable with it, then I would go. I know I personally wouldn't be comfortable doing that, but I think it's a personal thing. It really only matters what you & your OB thing

One thing you may want to keep in mind that a hospital away from home may not allow you to do a VBAC (even if it is allowed by their hospital and the OB on call performs them, they may not allow you to without being a previous patient/knowing your medical history), so if you did go into labor for some reason you may have no other option than a RCS 8 hours away from home. Which, you may be fine with, so that might be a non-issue as well :)

  • I wouldn't but that's just cus I am a chicken :)
  • It seems to me that as you are a STM, you have some idea how you might be feeling at that point in your pregnancy. So if you think you will be physically up to traveling and are OK with the possibility of having the baby while on vacation, go for it! Personally, I would be scared, but this is my first pregnancy, so I can't even make an educated guess as to how I will feel at 35 weeks. I am also most comfortable when I am following a plan as much as possible, so the idea of giving birth at a different hospital thsn the one I am planning on would freak me out.

I'm due July 16th and driving 8 hours away on June 20th for a cousins wedding. Right now I have a clean bill of health but as time nears, I will cancel if I need to or if my OB says so. Just check with your OB. I don't think is any reason you shouldn't be able to.

  • I say go and have a good time!!
  • I spoke with the nurse line at my DO last week about this. I was considering taking a babymoon with friends somewhere around 32 weeks so I called to ask if it was ok to still travel then. The nurse said absolutely ok, up until 36 weeks.

I ended up moving the trip up to next weekend which will be 26 weeks just for my own comfort level. I wouldn't do 8 hours in a car at 35 weeks though. Think of the torture on your bladder... *shudders*.
  • I'm due July 8 and am driving 10 hours to a wedding on June 14. I know that's cutting it kind of close, but I will take the same precautions you mentioned. We regularly drive 13 hours from Iowa City to Atlanta and back, and this is the same route but stopping sooner (Chattanooga), so it will actually feel short to me!

  • I'm due end of July and planning an 8 hour trip home for a family function. Now if my doctor says no then I won't go but I see no reason why not as long as your prepared and have done your homework!

  • Yes! I would go. Sounds like your family will be there and you are driving so worst case scenario, you just find the nearest hospital and have the baby. I will be traveling by car 15 hours each way 4 weeks before my due date.
