October 2013 Moms

I have no idea how to feed my baby.

Now that she's 6 months and started baby food and cereal I don't know how to space it all out so she'll eat! Do I drop a bottle or keep it the same and just try to get her eat in between a bottle. Currently she's eating 7 - 4 1/2 to 5oz bottles of BM and a little baby food once a day. Over the past couple weeks she doesn't seem to be as hungry at the 3 hour mark as usual. So how should I start trying to feed her on a routine? Should I make the bottles bigger and space them out longer? Does she need the same amount of BM(or more or less)since she'll be eating more foods? I don't mean to sound dumb, but as a FTM I am really over whelmed and sorta lost! I know every baby is different, but what guidelines do you use? Thanks!

Re: I have no idea how to feed my baby.

  • I just follow his cues to know whether he is hungry or not. I generally feed solids around the same time each day and when he seems hungry or extra fussy and over playing then I feed him.

  • I'm right there with you. I'm glad I have a couple weeks to figure this out

  • At this point you should be keeping the feeds the same but trying foods in between.

If you are just starting out, do your usual am feed and then mid morning give a taste of some food. That way if there are any allergic reactions you have the day to figure it out.

Not sure how things will progress as they start to eat more foods and what the ratio of milk to solids would be, but for now, it is just for experimenting vs an actual feeding.

  • The way my pedi explained it to us made a lot of sense. Feed the solids at breakfast lunch and dinner...just like when we eat. He suggested giving the solid first then breast milk because when we eat we eat first and then drink to wash it down. That didn't work for us though... so fwiw, I breastfeed first as long as he wants and then offer the solid after that. He gets breast milk and solid at the 7, 11, and 6 o'clock feedings and then only breastmilk at the 3 o'clock feeding and at 8 for bed. Hope that helps...I felt overwhelmed at first too!!

  • I'm trying to figure this all out too, especially since I work all day. We have only done some oatmeal in the evenings, about every-other day. I'm finding it hard to find the time for it, but I'm also not ready to have daycare (family, but still...) feed her anything but bottles yet.

  • Lo ate at 6 am today, by 9 I thought now would be a great time for oatmeal and pears! Wrong, she had a total melt down, so I bf her and all was right in her world. We have just been giving mid morning oatmeal every couple of days, and at 5:30-6 pm we do veggies, sweet potatoes, butternut squash or peas. She seems to like the even food, it's between the 4 pm feeding and her night bottle at 7:30-8. Not sure how to incorporate "food " in either thanks for asking!
  • Keep bottles the same...feed only 1-2 tablespoons of baby food in between bottle. Once a day would be fine. Right now you are just introducing solids you don't want to replace meals. (According to my doc.)

  • We just started and are doing once a day at dinner after she nurses. It's been messy fun! Since the first month is just about getting use to it, I thought this routine would be the easiest to go with.

I'm also so not ready for figuring out food at daycare.
  • We try to do twice a day at lunch and dinner before her normal sized bottle. Feeding her before a bottle deft does not make her drink less of her bottle, and my baby bullet said to feed first and then give the bottle. #itrustthebullet

  • We do breakfast, lunch and dinner. Solids first then I wait about 10-15 minutes then he drinks his full bottle
