Cleaning baby's tongue

Since we've been giving mylanta to LO every now and then for his reflux, his tongue has formed a think white quoting. I see LO put his tongue out as if he is annoyed with some after taste constantly. Anyways, the pedi nurse suggested taking some glycerine and wiping his tongue after his bath. I checked with the pharmacy and they said they did not carry glycerine that would be safe to put in LOs mouth. They suggested there might be mouth cleaning swabs available that I could look into.

I wanted to ask, is anyone cleaning LOs tongue? Are you using anything specific? Have you heard of using glycerine as a cleaning agent?

Re: Cleaning baby's tongue

  • I've never heard of using glycerin as a cleaning agent.
I would just take a wet washcloth and try and wipe Lo's tongue.
I've done this before when I noticed an extra white tongue on my LO too. I wanted to make sure it wasn't thrush. (It won't come off if it is thrush).

  • Yeah we did the wet wash cloth but it still persists. His pedi checked him for thrush and said it was just residue from medicine and formula. Maybe I am not doing a good job cleaning with cloth. Will try again.
  • I was told a 1/4 tsp of baking soda mixed in 1/2 c of water. We swab with a q-tip.
