Quant Levels Question

I just called to schedule my first prenatal visit, and I mentioned that I had been O'ing fairly late in my cycles (think... 40 day cycles).  They want me to come in tonight for Quant. Level blood test, then go back in 48 hours for a second to compare the results for dating purposes.  When my dates were off with my second, they just did a dating ultrasound, but they said that they don't like to do that now unless there is spotting, because the insurance doesn't like to pick up the cost of the US.  I thought your levels could vary so greatly, can they really narrow the dates down that well from a blood draw?  I'm guessing from my charts that I'm about a week behind what my LMP puts me - more like four weeks instead of five.  I'm not too worried as I'm sure they'll explain more after the testing... just wondering if anyone knew much about this blood test?

Re: Quant Levels Question

  • Yeahhh... so Dr. Google just told me this:
"The hCG levels should not be used to date a pregnancy since these numbers can vary so widely." (American Pregnancy Association website).  Am I going to be paying for a blood test now, that is pretty much pointless? hmmm

The levels are so broad I don't know how they could possibly use that...

  • See that's what I thought!  Grr... now I have to drive 30 mins to the hospital to take this test, then 30 mins home.  Rinse & Repeat on Thursday evening.  I would rather have waited for a dating ultrasound, or for them to at least just go over my ttc data I recorded at my first appointment.  I should've just lied and said I had no clue when my LMP was! ;)
  • Yeah, I think a dating ultrasound would be more accurate than hcg levels.

  • Yup. $153 out of pocket because we haven't met our deductible for the year yet. Should be interesting to see what they have to say on Friday now.
  • I got my results today and they were 6000+ (cant remember the exact number, i know 6000 something). The midwife said the numbers would suggest 3-5 weeks. Im supposedly 6 weeks according to my dates she said that was good though.
  • Sigh. I know it's not a big deal one week off either way I just don't get why they put an order for a test if it cannot narrow it down more than just a couple week span. I guess I'll just go along with however many weeks they decide to say I am (unless I went overdue and I would fight for that extra week).

On the bright side if my numbers are/aren't sky-high I can probably rule out/verify twins, right? :) I had a dream it was twins 2 days after my BFP... then the next day my three year old DD decided I had two babies in my belly and I haven't even told her I'm PG yet!! Haha
  • Update in case anyone cares to read: Well the good news is that my numbers more than doubled so everything looks good there.

After arriving at the office at noon the doctor finally spoke to me (for five minutes) at TWO PM; and ended up ordering an ultrasound in week and a half anyway. Crazy. Oh well, at least now I know everything looks good so far.
