Another swaddle question

Are there signs to look for that indicate LO doesn't need to be swaddled anymore?  Some of you mention that your baby immediately tries to break free or fusses because of the swaddle.  I can swaddle DD and she will sleep fine. She sometimes breaks free from it but probably just because she can. She is almost 4 months old and isn't rolling yet but sorta trying. Last night I didn't tuck her arms in and she slept just ok... she's been doing pretty great, only waking up 1 or 2 times at night but last night wasn't that good.  What do you all think?

Re: Another swaddle question

  • I could have written this post to the letter! I want to transition her out of the swaddle (we are doing arms out) but she just doesn't seem to sleep as well. blockquote class="Quote">

  • With my LO, i noticed she would roll over on her side while swaddled and that made me nervous, so we switched. But before we were kind of forced to, I had been contemplating stopping the swaddle because she just didn't seem to sleep as soundly with it as she had been. Plus she would fight it for a lot longer than she used to before settling down.

  • If it ain't broke don't fix it.

If it's still working for you-- leave it alone.

  • Seems that if she's sleeping better while swaddled, I'm going to stick with it or at least until she starts to roll over.  Thanks for your responses!

  • I'm contemplating breaking the swaddle too. We just transitioned him to his crib last night, and he slept 7.5 hours straight (while swaddled). He isnt rolling yet, but I am worried that he might suddenly roll during the night while I am sleeping, and I'll miss it on the monitor. Maybe I'm overthinking it...

I'd go with your gut. Does he roll while playing on a playmat? or during tummy time? Like not all the way over, but can he roll up on his side?

  • @rfred20 He has never fully rolled on the playmat or during tummy time. But sometimes when he is on his back on the playmat, he briefly rolls onto his side and then right back to his back. During tummy time he doesnt even attempt it. So, the rolling to his side makes me kind of nervous.

That's what Alex did for weeks and weeks and weeks. And that's what made me switch to not swaddling, in addition to her not sleeping as soundly. She finally decided yesterday evening to roll over from back to tummy. So I suppose I still had like a month and a half of swaddle time left, but the side thing made me super nervous.

I love both of those names. If I could name a little boy Alexander while having an Alexandra, I would!

Rolling is harder when swaddled, so its unlikely that he would roll for the first time while wrapped up. If he sleeps better swaddled, I think you're safe to continue for a while. Just my opinion tho, so do what you're comfortable with!
