Haha! From my understanding she asked that because her baby had never had formula and she wanted to be able to feed her while she was at the jail. But yea, that came across funny!
I'm not sure of my thoughts on this. I do think it was probably over kill to call the police. But I wasn't there, so I don't know. I probably would not have called the police, though.
I'm not sure that I would have called the police about the drinking and breastfeeding, but it did say they had to call someone to drive the baby home. If I thought she drank what they claim and was going to drive with the kid I would call the police though. Especially when I think about how low my tolerance was after I gave birth after not drinking for so long. A couple of LI Iced teas would knock me on my ass.
I get that there are two sides to every story, but that is ridiculous that she was arrested. I have had a glass of wine in a restaurant while breastfeeding. I didn't slurp it down, I drank it slowly and enjoyed it. It's actually recommended to drink while breastfeeding because it takes awhile for it to get in the bloodstream.
However, if she had a couple beers in 20 mins and some Long Island iced teas, I would be concerned and understand calling the police. And honestly, I'd probably ask to bring my baby along if they had only had breastmilk!!!
I just don't see how she could possibly think that they would allow her to take the baby with her if they arrested her because they believed that she was bringing harm to the baby.
I see issues with the waitress and the cops far more than the mom. I think that the cops were absolutely wrong to arrest her there is no law (that I know of) that restricts bfing and drinking. Clearly the waitress does not understand how bf works.
I don't drink but the whole thing pisses me off. If any thing would have been done at all I thinkthe restaurant could have chosen to refuse to continue to serve the mother drinks (not saying they should, but I think that is within their rights).

Why did no one ask the bartender or the current waitress who ordered the drinks that were on the table?
I also don't think she should have been drinking, but that's just me. I know the logistics of it, I just personally wouldn't feel comfortable doing it in public and risking this exact type of situation.
Also, not pregnant 1 Long Island knocks me on my ass. I would hope that she wasn't really drinking a few Long Islands while out with her infant.
The waitress was out of line. I never drank more than one light beer, but I really don't see the big deal with two light beers, especially if it was going to be a few hours until the next feed. People just don't know. What the fuck.
Hold the fuck on. That lady did absolutely nothing wrong. The waitress was completely out of line by calling the police and the poilce were all sorts of fucked for arresting her.
Absolutely. And it sounds like she was at a restaurant, not out at a bar or something (where the logic could be "she was in a bar drinking, it was an unsafe place for a baby"). I frequently have a glass of wine at dinner, whether or not DD is there.
The fact that she was never actually breathalyzed also sends red flags for me--unless, of course, she refused to (which would explain the arrest). But she claims she wished the had given one, so I assume she didn't refuse one.
And do I think it completely normal that in her panic over the situation and the kid, she might ask if she could bring her baby with her? Yes. FFS. She was probably really upset at that point. I'd be ready to pop someone in the mouth, so I think dumb questions are pretty benign.
I still don't understand what "danger" she was putting her kid in--she didn't attempt to drive, there are no reports that she was acting intoxicated or erratic (the waitress says the table was "having a good time" which is not the same thing), and how the heck would a bystander know if she had consumed alcohol at the right time to even have any in her breastmilk at that time? (Not to mention, from two beers consumed "normally" not pounded down? The amount would be miniscule.) No, I think someone was being a slaggy buttinski.
That said, I wouldn't want to deal with the judgypantsness of the whole situation, so I wouldn't plan on BFing with a beer in hand.
I definitely think that no broken law=no arrest, so I don't think they had grounds to arrest her especially without gathering an accurate account of what drinks she had consumed from someone who was actually involved with her.
Edited: My keyboard is literally skipping letters that I know I typed. WTF.
Oh, and asking to bring the baby? Fuck yes. That baby had only been breastfed! Of course you would want to continue to breastfeed the baby! I would have been speed dialing my lawyer. JFC.
That's part of what I meant about not having a clue. If I felt like I was being arrested without cause, I would call a lawyer. Or I would have one of the members of my family that was there call a lawyer. If they think you are endangering your child, which is the reason they arrested her, they aren't going to let you have the child with you. Hyaline makes a good point that she was probably shocked and out of sorts when she asked though.
I don't understand how you can arrest someone for alcohol related offenses (endangerment because of alcohol in this case) and not give a breathalyzer. If you are that concerned to call the cops, I would think you could ask around a little bit first to get some details (how many drinks, do you know if she is driving..) from her waitress or bartender. She worked there so she would have known them well enough to talk to them or the manager.
If she really was on her 3rd LI in an hour and was bfing her child, I don't feel so bad about a file being started with child services. Bystanders need to have their facts straight before calling in though.
People do things that don't make sense all the time. Some women BF because it is free and it has nothing to do with health benefits so what they put into their bodies wouldn't be such a concern.
Not saying this women did, just saying it doesn't surprise me that people drunk feed their baby.
Well, she said she won't give the baby formula because she feels it is unhealthy and inferior, so the health of her child seems important to her.
I only read the first article which didn't say anything about that. But now I have a real reason to not like her.
Remember when I said people couldn't have preferences about BF vs FF without it devolving into this the other day in some other thread? Yeah, she never said formula is the debbil. She said she felt BF was healthier, so she chose to BF.

Except per above, she said formula was unhealthy. Not the same as something being healthier than the other.

She never said unhealthy or used the word inferior. She just said she felt BF was the healthier option.
