1st Trimester

Sleeping Position

Hi everyone,

I understand that sleeping on your left is the best, for your body and to provide oxygenated blood to the baby.  But, can you tell me at what week you started sleeping on your left side?  Did you start immediately once you found out you were pregnant?

Thanks!

It wasn't until I was much further along that consciously slept on my side versus my back or stomach.  I think I was about 24 weeks or something.  In any case, I'm most comfortable sleeping on my right side, so that's how I slept.  To me, getting good rest was more important that sleeping on my left side where I wouldn't be comfortable.

  • Sleep however you like until your body informs you that you need to change. Trust me, when its time to stop sleeping on your back/stomach/right side you will know. Can't catch your breath, weird numbing of limbs, etc, are all clues. Before those- whatever allows you to get the best sleep is best.

  • Thank you both, that's very helpful!  I was worried I was sleeping wrong and that in itself was preventing me from having a good night's rest!
  • Sleep however is comfortable throughout your entire pregnancy. Side, back, stomach it doesn't matter.
  • I sleep in whatever way my body will let me. I trust my body to wake me up (not to mention I toss and turn most of the night) and there is no way I could sleep with a pillow confining me to my left side.

By the time the "no sleeping on your back" rule was something to be worried about, I already couldn't stay on my back for long. My DR pretty much doesn't care as long as I'm comfy enough to get some kind of sleep.

  • Thank you all so much, I feel relieved!!  Hopefully I'll finally have a good nights' sleep!
  • I've always slept on my left slide but you should do in whatever position you are comfortable in and can get the most rest.
