Breastfeeding

Baby just born.. Intro and seeking help

So my baby boy has officially entered the world!! He was born via emergency c-section in a pool of meconium and an elevated heart rate. He's in the nursery with labored breathing (I think due to gunky lungs... Waiting for dr to answer questions) and he's under an oxygen hood

They already gave me a heads up, he will likely need pumped colostrum initially because his breathing is so labored that latching will be quite difficult. He was born at 9:53pm and it's 2:05am and I've only seen him for 5 minutes and I haven't held him yet :(

I just wanted to introduce myself officially. I am very invested in breastfeeding and I want to be the best advocate for him as possible. I don't know if I'll get push back or get pressured into formula, but I want to be prepared to fight. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!

  • My baby was also in the nursery under the oxygen hood right after birth. They asked if they could give him formula while he was under and I just asked if I could try to hand express. I got a little and fed him from the spoon. That seemed to be enough. As soon as he was out of the nursery, I did skin to skin and tried betting him to latch. He was in there for 4 hours. Ask the nurses to show you how to hand express and go from there. Good luck and congratulations on your new LO!

  • Definitely hand express and start now it will help with your supply long term the more that comes out now the better your supply will be but don't freak out if you don't get a lot he just needs a few mls to be satisfied right now his tummy is so tiny, try and do skin to skin as soon as they let you and for as long as you can that will actually help regulate his breathing and heart rate as well (our bodies are amazing) I'd also ask to speak with the hospitals LC to get any advice while still in the hospital, nice thing about the c section is you get to stay a bit longer and can get a bit more help with BF in the beginning. Congrats and get rest while you can especially if he's being looked after by someone else your body has gone through a lot and the best thing you can do is rest and stay hydrated !
  • Congrats on the birth of your son.  Hope he recovers quickly from the breathing problems.  I don't have experience with this specifically, but from all I do know, I think it will be important to make sure you are pumping regularly so your milk supply comes in.  I would think at least every 3 hours you should pump.  Hopefully your hospital has a lactation consultant you can see to help you.  Good luck!
  • Congrats!
Get a hospital grade pump from the hospital and start pumping now - for 20 minutes every 2-3 hours around the clock until baby is able to nurse.  Fx that you are able to hold your baby soon.
Agree.  Also set up a time to meet with the hospital lactation consultant ASAP. I know that nurses can be helpful, but when I was in the hospital with my son, the quality varied greatly and I know I was given lots of bad advice.  Hang in there.  Hope you get to hold your baby soon!
