Need info about tongue and lip ties

What are some good websites to learn about this? I recently joined an online support group for babies with reflux and food sensitivities since I started an elimination diet to find out what is bothering my daughter a few weeks ago. I am dairy, soy, gluten, egg, nut, and shellfish free, and only minimal caffeine. I have come to realize many moms in the group found out their babies had tongue or lip ties that were related to the reflux and tummy issues? I didn't know reflux could be an issue from a tie. I thought ties just caused latch problems. My LO's latch has always felt shallow to me and her reflux is still present despite the fact that she's tried Zantac and now is on Prevacid. My diet change has made a small improvement, but I am wondering about the tie issue as well. Would someone at my LLL meetings be able to evaluate her for ties, or is this something her pediatrician has to do? I am surprised that her doctor did not look for ties (that I know of) with all her reflux problems. Anyways, any info or experiences with ties causing bad gas and reflux problems would be greatly appreciated! TIA!

ETA: I wanted to add that she has always been great at nursing and has been gaining and chunking up rapidly since birth! This is why I never wondered about her having a tie until now. She is almost 8 weeks.

Re: Need info about tongue and lip ties

  • My daughter had a lip and tongue tie. They were clipped by Dr. Kotlow, whose website has lots of good info under "breastfeeding health" and "articles."

    https://www.kiddsteeth.com/

I also found these sites helpful:

    https://breastfeedingusa.org/content/article/tell-me-about-tongue-ties

    https://www.cwgenna.com/ttidentify.html

    https://kellymom.com/health/baby-health/bfhelp-tonguetie/

I'm not sure if someone at your LLL meeting would be able to diagnose it. My LC caught the lip tie when several pediatricians missed it, and the first pediatrician my DD saw in the hospital missed the tongue tie. It's always worth a second opinion if you think tongue tie fits and your pediatrician doesn't think your LO has it. Many doctors miss posterior tongue ties. If you can find someone in your area who is knowledgeable about tongue ties that might be your best option. The LLL group might be able to suggest someone. Good luck!

  • @heather52904 thank you. This has been really helpful, especially the article on how TT relates to colic, gas, and reflux. A lot of the symptoms sound like my daughter to a T. I'm going to call my LLL leader tomorrow to see if I can get a referral to a LC who has experience with this. Dr. Kotlow's website says he is located in Albany. Did you have to travel there to have her LT and TT clipped?

  • Luckily we live less than an hour from Albany so he was convienent for us. I know a lot of people travel to see him, but I'm sure there are other doctors around too. I think he is one of the few that use lasers.

  • There is a group on Facebook called "Tongue Tie Babies Support Group".  Once you join the group, if you click on the Files tab, the first is "Welcome and Forum Rules, Resources, Provider Lists, Links, Etc".  The provider list may help you find someone in your area experienced in this.  I second what the previous poster said about not all pediatricians being experienced in this.  So I would try to see a LC familiar with ties or a provider from this list.  Good luck!
  • My daughter had no problem latching and the pedis at the hospital did not find her tounge tie. As she got a bit older I could see she had a about half a tounge tie. We had it snipped this week our pedi and the LCs said we had to go to an ENT. He did it pretty quickly and she nursed immediately following. The top lip tie I left alone because it requires surgery and only has cosmetic benefits in our case. I suspected ties and I looked at pics online and compared them to DDs mouth.

  • Thanks everyone for your responses! I seriously had no clue that a baby that had seemingly no problems with latching could still have a TT or LT. I'm definitely going to join the FB group and look up someone to evaluate her.
