PSA The "Honest" Company, hidden costs

So I ordered the "free samples" from the Honesty Company, and unfortunately did not see the little asterisk and info on the bottom saying that after the samples (which I had to pay a couple bucks for the shipping and handling) they would start automatically charging and shipping me stuff. So I was charged $155 and had to call up and complain, but will still be out some money. Thought I would share to save anyone else the hassle.

thank you! this happened to me too. i ordered a bunch of samples and there is no way to stop the hidden bundles from arriving until after the samples get here.  you only get 7 days to cancel.  its a trick and a crappy way to do business.  Jessica Alba should be ashamed.

  • Eh, I feel like every service that offers a free trial is like this: amazon prime Netflix, etc

Yeah, but I think they're a lot clearer.  Also, most people know when they're subscribing to Amazon Prime or Netflix, they're subscribing -- they just get a bonus free month at the beginning.  In OP's situation, I think people really just think they're getting free samples.

That's why I almost never take free samples.  I always remember my high school economics teacher saying, "The most important thing to remember is TINSTAAFL!!  There is no such thing as a free lunch!"

I agree with both of you.  These things pretty much always have the same catch, but some companies are more sneaky about it.  Not worth the hassle to me since I'd probably forget to cancel in time even if I knew I had to do it, then I'd be screwed.

@jujuB22 sorry you got screwed.  I hope the stuff they sent you is at least decent so you get something out of it.

  • That's shady. I don't like the "Honest Company" ever since they went after a small mommy blog and bullied her, trying to convince her to give up her name even though she had her name first and threatened her with a lawsuit. I go out of my way to not buy their products because of this.

  • I feel kind of dumb because now that they tell me where the warning is I see it. Durh.

  • How horrible... thanks for the heads up.
  • I signed up and got the samples, then called and canceled the day after my samples arrived. I thought it was pretty clear that I was signing up for bundles that needed to be canceled within seven days of getting the samples. Like pp said, no different than prime or movie channels, or a lot of other things with the same schtick. It was annoying to have to call, but not that terrible. They tried to convince me to put the bundles on hold until after the baby is born, but I just said no I feel more comfortable canceling and reordering at that time--and she backed off. The diapers have really adorable patterns, and I thought the products were decent (but tiny sized). I actually ended up buying the full size lotion and shampoo/body wash at BBB and used a $5 off coupon.

My opinion--it's worth it if you go in with your eyes open and can trust yourself not to forget to cancel.

I ordered a diaper bundle package with a voucher from Zulily.. I figured you can't beat 320 diapers with wipes for 40$!! I already pushed my next deliver back to July so I wont have to worry about it until after she is here and will give me time to try them out.. I will obviously know by then if they work for her, to move my date up and if they dont to buy a different brand and cancel because they dont work.
  • I've been using honest brand products for about a year. Aside from the sample issue which I never tried, I love their stuff, the ease of bundling and it shipping to my house. Plus, it being natural and biodegradable/plant based makes me feel good :)
