Gestational diabetes - UPDATE :)

So, my routine glucose test was abnormal (166) and I have to go in this week for the 3-hour test. Any of you ladies dealt with GD? I can't remember.. It's been a while. I'm kinda scared I guess. I knew a lady who developed GD during pregnancy and it never went away. :/ I feel too young for this. Any comments or experiences you'd like to share? Thanks ladies..

--------UPDATE--------

Ok, all the freaking out was for nothing, everything was normal today at my 3-hour test --- THANK GOODNESS.  I binged like a bad, bad girl right afterwards in almost a panic because I felt so weak and sick.  Why can't there be an easier way to test for gd GD?!?

Thanks for all your kind and encouraging words. :)<3

Re: Gestational diabetes - UPDATE :)

  • I was a sugar mama!

I was diet controlled and my biggest challenge was controlling my fasting sugars. Apparently I did a good job, though, since Finn was my smallest kid by almost a pound.

I didn't do my follow-up testing because I kept forgetting. Bad me. But honestly, the diet wasn't too terrible. The hardest part was knowing that having GD increased my risk for developing type 2 diabetes later in life.

  • I had GD for all three just watch things like juice and soda. Increase protein and lower carb intake. It really isn't that bad but can increase birth weight. Good luck

  • Yep, BTDT twice and it went away with no issues immediately after pregnancy. I tested 4x daily andwas able to diet control both times. It really wasn't too bad or hard. Big things to remember are that it isn't something that's "your fault" and that most of the scary consequences happen when GD is poorly controlled or undiagnosed.

If you end up with the diagnosis please feel free to ask me if you think of questions. Here's hoping you pass the 3hr!

  • Thank you all so much. I feel better about it after reading your experiences! I don't know why but the call just upset me, maybe already sensitive today or something. Hopefully I won't have to mess with it but it's good to know that many times it can be diet controlled.

This was similar to me. The diet may have been a blessing in disguise because it kept my weight gain under control. My daughter was 7 lbs 10 oz. I went for the follow up testing and it was gone.

You're not alone. I felt like a failure when I had an elevated 1hr reading then broke down in tears when I got the DX the first time. It's a pretty common reaction to be upset about it especially when there are a lot of unknowns. Diet control is almost always the first step unless you have what's known as a "spectacular fail" on a draw, but it is also common to have to adjust treatment as the pregnancy progresses. Just so you have a heads up :)

  • I had gulclose intolerance which is when one or two (can't remember which) out of three come back abnormal. My family has a big history of diabetes so I was pretty sure I was going to have it during my pregnancy.

I controlled mine with good eating and light excerisce. I did have to do non stress tests once I hit 30 weeks to monitor her movement and size.

I was a sugar mama too! I definitely ugly cried when I found out I had GD. Little did I know I would only have to live with it a couple weeks because DD came at 31 weeks. But anyway I was diet controlled and I was doing very well with it. I figured out I could eat a frozen yogurt bar after dinner or a couple pieces of dark chocolate. Breakfast was the hardest for me because I had to eat the exact same thing every day: 2-3 frittata muffins and 2 turkey sausage links or bacon and a cup of decaf tea with a splash of milk and 1/2tsp of sugar. No morning carbs for me. I didn't want to look at eggs again until recently. Lunch and dinner I was able to play around with more, and I had just started going for walks after dinner when my BP went wacky. It sucks not being able to eat whatever you want whenever you want, but it's a healthy diet. FWIW, my MIL had GD with all three of her pregnancies and SIL failed her 1 hour but passed her 3 hour. Hoping you pass the 3 hour!!

I was really upset when I got my diagnosis too but it was ok. High protein meals and long walks made a world of difference. Good luck to you!

  • Not that I want to have GD, but I know I need to do better in the diet/exercise dept anyway.  I will post an update after my 3-hour.  :)  Thank you <3

  • I was so upset when i was diagnosed but it really wasn't too bad.  the worst part was pricking my finger all the time to test my levels... but now i'm a pro when it comes to needles!
  • Hugs! I didn't have GD, but I had to take the 3-hour (and passed).

I took a protein bar with me to eat immediately after but I still almost passed out on the way home. I drank two huge glasses of whole milk + chocolate syrup before I started feeling better. And then I slept for like 4 hours....oh, those glorious pre-baby naps :)

Good luck! Let us know how it goes.

This kid may not have a lot of bowel, but he has plenty of guts!
DS born at 34 weeks with (surprise!) gastroschisis turned short bowel syndrome.
131 days in the NICU, 7 trips to the OR, G-button, daily TPN....
We are impatiently awaiting the day we can say goodbye to his girlfriend Ivy for good.
  • I failed the one hour, but went on to pass the three hour.  Don't freak out just yet.
  • Update posted, thanks ladies!  I'm so relieved.

Now to get myself to still eat better even though it's not medically "necessary" at the moment (aside from heart disease, high blood pressure, etc etc ;) )

  • @cshum24 - that's the crazy thing-- I didn't even eat anything before taking the test last Friday.  I think they might set the bar a little higher (or lower??) for the 1-hour to be sure they catch all GD cases.

  • Happy to see your update :)

I made DH go with me to the 3 hour b/c I was afraid I'd pass out.  When I had about 10 minutes left to go, I sent him to the hospital cafe to order me pancakes and a green tea.  I downed it all like a champ!  I wish there was an easier way too.
