sleep schedule advice

I am looking to tweek LO schedule. He's been waking up by 6am. I've been putting him to bed by 7, so he's getting a good 11hrs at night. However his naps are 3 1hr ones. He used to do 2 but since waking up at 6, this is a new time as of recent. He used to sleep until 7-7:30. I used to shower before he got up and a lot of our outside activities were scheduled greatly around his naps. Now it's a hot mess.
How long is supposed to go between naps? He can generally only do 2-2.5hrs. I usually go 4hrs between last nap and bed. I would like him to stay up a bit later and wake later. How can I achieve this? Or is it just not going to happen?

  • I wish I could change our schedule, too. No matter what time I put her to bed, she's up at 6-6:15. :(

  • It's tough, babies are constantly changing it up on you. If he is getting 11 good hours of sleep I don't know if I would mess with that. You can try pushing his bed time later 5-10 minutes at a time. For the naps, try keeping him up 3 hours after her first nap. That might help him consolidate.

Thank you! I was just thinking of this. He generally starts to poop out after 2 hours. I have been trying to push 2.5hrs the past few days. I am going to start 3hrs. I am getting 2.5hrs ok if his first nap isn't a mess. If he gets a good 1.5-2hrs his first nap then we are in the clear for 2.5hrs if its an hr or less 2hrs is as long as he goes.
Thanks again. Monday is a new start!

  • The only way we successfully changed it was with daylight savings. I just never adjusted him and he pretty much goes to bed and wakes up 1 hr later. But babies will be babies and there's not too much you can do - I'd try moving it forward a little later each night like pp's have suggested, and hopefully he goes with it.
Yes, We changed from 7-7 to 8-8 then all the sudden everything became a shit show. LOL! We began sleep regression, then teething and now who the hell knows. Watch once I get this down to how I wish, then he's gonna change and it'll go out the window.  :((

  • I try to stick to a 3/2 schedule, play three hours, nap two. Most of the time she wakes up on her own at about 1.5-2 hrs, if not, I'll actually wake her up (unless she's sick of course!).

Up at 7am, nap from 10-12, nap from 3-5, bed at 8ish. She wakes 1x a night to nurse, that's totally my fault, I could wean her off that, but just am not worried about it.

    Hope that helps!
  • I just talked to our pedi about this at our 9 month visit today.  We still rock L to sleep for naps and sometimes it takes 30 mins and then he only sleeps 40.  He advised keeping him up longer and try for 2 longer naps instead of 3 short ones.  I like the idea of the 3/2 schedule.  Right now he's only up for 2-2/12 hours max except the 3 1/2 to 4 hours between his last nap and bedtime.

It also doesn't matter what time we put him to bed, he's always up between 5:30-6!
