Baby name with a slight issue

edited March 2014 in May 2014 Moms
Ok, yes, I know there is a board for baby names but I've got another issue along with the possible name choices that I know you all will shoot straight with me on to let me know if I'm over-thinking. We are still team green so I may not even need a girl name but I want it lined out just in case. I've had it picked out for a while as it incorporates the names of mine and DH's grandmothers but the MN also happens to be that of MIL's. We are currently having major issues and I just don't know if I can give my kid her name even though it's essentially DH's gma's name but how do you explain that? The first name is for sure not changing.

Re: Baby name with a slight issue

  • I think Romalee Elizabeth flows the best. I would also choose that because Romalee is such an unusual name, I would want to pair it with something more common (that's just me). But if you really can't stand the thought of people thinking she's named after your MIL, then you gotta do what you gotta do.

I think Romalee is beautiful!   Go with your gut.  (Hopefully) you won't always be in a tiff with your MIL.   In 10 years, will you regret not honoring the grandmothers?

  • What a beautiful name- I love that it is different but not crazy different.

  • I love your name choices! Go with your gut!
  • Honestly, I have no idea what my MIL's middle name is, or what my grandma's middle name was. So i say if you want to honor the grandmas' go for it. In the end you're naming your kid after her great grandma, not after your MIL, even if it's the same name.

  • Thank you all for the advice! For the most part, seems like I'm overthinking and need to stick with the original choice.

  • IMO, they kinda smoosh together. But I agree with PP that you need to go with your gut.
  • So Elizabeth is both your grandmothers' names but also mil name? I think in confused. I do like Romalee Elizabeth best but Elise and Eloise go well too. All classy choices.

Elizabeth tends to be pretty popular so I don't see how one person in a family can claim it. It's a common name in DHs family and we would have used it as out girl mn if we were having one.

They're all beautiful names, but kind of a tongue twister! Just remember that you won't be calling her by her full name 90% of the time. I like the Elise and Elizabeth options. I think Eloise or Isadora might be asking too much of people's mouths.

Romalee is a combination of my gma's names.  Elizabeth is his gma's middle name and my MIL's first name.

  • Would you pronounce it "Romilly" (trad spelling) or would it be "Rohma-lee"?

I've never heard of Romilly before so I'm not trying to create a youneek spelling. It's literally two traditional names (Roma & Lee) put together and I chose not to cap the "L".  I'm looking for guidance on the middle name, ie, which flows best, and it looks like it's between Elizabeth and Elise.  I'll just have to work on the MIL issues.

  • Don't take this the wrong way, but why does your daughter's name have to be an amalgamation of several other people's names? Why can't she have her own name?

We had an issue where we both felt like we wanted to give DD a relative's name, but both our mothers have passed and my grandmothers have passed, so we couldn't choose without the risk of feeling like we were leaving people out. We just decided to give her non-family names in the end.

    Whatever floats your boat though.
