Anyone See The New Autism Study?

Just saw a quick overview of it on PBS. Basically, it was saying that they have narrowed down the basic cause for most ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder) kids as a malformation in a small area of the brain. They also said that they can tell that it occurs while that section of the brain is developing, from about 19 weeks to 30 weeks during pregnancy. Of course, they said they don't know what causes the malformation (genetic, environmental, "uterine event", or combination of things).

I have one ASD child and 2 NT (Neurotypical) kids, so I find it all very interesting. Any thoughts?

so did they say that it is present during that time, as in you can see it during that part of pregnancy?
And is it true 100% of the time? That is very interesting.

They did an interview with one of the scientists involved, and I understood that they studied the brains of ASD and NT children who were deceased and over 90% of the ASD kids had this malformation in the same small area of the cortex. They said they know from other studies that the cortex starts off as a single layer and separates into 6 layers, each one having a specific type of brain cell which has a specific genetic marker. They know this happens between 19 and 30 weeks gestation. At some point in the ASD kids the process was interrupted, and the layers did not develop those very specific brain cells in this one particular area that deals with social and emotional processes.

I would assume it's not something you can see on an a/s at the time just because of the scale, although they did say that kids could be tested sooner (1 or 2 years old) by somehow looking for those genetic markers.

I don't know where to find the actual study, but here is the NBC article on it. https://www.nbcnews.com/health/kids-health/autism-diagnoses-surge-30-percent-kids-cdc-reports-n63856

  • So, it sounds like they have ruled out vaccinations as the cause for ASD completely, correct? I'm going to be a new mother, and would love to hear educated thoughts on to vaccinate or not. Thanks, ladies! And thanks for the post and any information.

Vaccinate! No link between vaccines and autism, never was. The doctor that said there was admitted it was made up. I believe he was stripped of his license.

Also, we are seeing out breaks of things like Whooping Cough and Measles, diseases that were eradicated decades ago, because enough people aren't vaccinating that the "herd Immunity" in the country has dropped below safe levels. This is the biggest danger to infants who are too young to be vaccinated against these diseases yet. By not vaccinating, you put not only your own children, but other people's children at risk.

  • I think vaccinations are something I would say do your research on, but as far as ASD goes I've never seen anything credible that linked the two.

And no, I've never thought it caused my son's ASD. All my kids have had all their shots.

  • That is so interesting! Thank you for sharing the info. I wonder what happens that causes the malformation. This makes so much more sense than the vaccine nonsense.

I have seen studies about low vitamin D and brain development in the womb, I wonder if that could be a contributing factor.

I hate that there are no real answers about autism.
