Flowers?

I almost always have a vase of fresh flowers or greenery in my home... it just adds color that makes me happy, my table looks always seems to look incomplete with out it. In the fall/winter I'll clip wintery type branches and berries while out on walks, and in the spring/summer I'll do the same with seasonal flowers/blossoms/etc. But I also regularly buy bunches of flowers from the grocery store, particularly Costco. Not expensive bouquets, mind you, just a $2 bunch of 6 tulips, etc. And DH brings home bought flowers for me all the time, probably once a month. Again, not big bouquets, but a small bunch of whatever's in season.
I got it from my family... my mom did the same, so did my grandmother... It's a European thing.

Anyways, I was getting some daffodils at the grocery store yesterday and the cashier asked me who they were for. When I told her they were just for me, she seemed surprised and delighted at the idea of someone getting flower for themselves, and said she never thinks to. Got me wondering...

Do you keep flowers in your house? Do you ever buy them for yourself? Does your DH? Only for special occasions, or just because? Why or why not?

Re: Flowers?

  • Oh yes. We buy sunflowers weekly at the farmers market. DHs restaurant does catering sometimes & he will bring me back the center pieces people didn't want. I have a zillion vases under my sink haha. I love flowers in the house.

  • i love the idea but cheap out and don't do it. i do try to cut flowers from our yard so that we can enjoy them more. i need to use it as incentive to keep the dining room table clean (i'm looking at you piles of mail, magazines, & coupons!)

i have some daffodils & forsythia right now that my mom sent home with us, it is lovely :)
  • I also love the idea, but can't spend the money every week on something that dies.  DH has gotten me flowers a couple of times.  Each time, I kind of decided that I would rather have an evening out or something like a pedicure.

  • Yes, I love having flowers at home. I have found that the nice bouquets are worth the money, though. When I get them from a good florist (we use the same local.one every time) they last forever and they're much prettier. The grocery store ones usually die pretty quickly, like within a week for sure.

If you were caught picking flowers around here, you'd be hanged without a trial. People are insane.about the arboretum flowers and the parks flowers. Plus there are signs everywhere, even on the arboretums hiking trail, saying "flowers are for enjoyment, not for picking" or something like that.

  • I do the same thing as you- buy a little something that is inexpensive and keep it on our dining room table. My husband loves daffodils and they are $1.29 for 10 stems at Trader Joe's, so that's what we have now.
  • I use to have fresh flowers and lots of house plants before kids.  It has been a hassle with boys always trying to get into them.  I think I might try it again this summer since they are over 3  and I do have one houseplant that they have left alone.  I have set aside a place in my yard for a cut flower garden- so here's hoping I can keep the bunnies from eating the young plants and my dogs from trampling them.
  • DH brings them home on special occasions. We were talking about flowers after he brought me home on Valentine's Day and he asked me what the last time he bought me flowers was. I told him after our miscarriage in Sept. He then said, "That's too bad. I need to buy you flowers more often." I didn't argue! I love getting flowers. I just don't ever think of just buying some...hmmm...good idea....

  • DH brings me flowers for vday, Mother's Day, and our anniversary. That's about it. I will buy flowers if we are hosting a party or something. I never buy flowers just b/c.

  • We cannot have flowers with our cat, he'll knock them down.  He tries to get the water from the vase. It doesn't matter where we keep it, or how high.. he will get there.  And break things in the process.  And if it's in such a crazy hidden spot, there's no point in having them because no one will see anyway.

  • I love the inexpensive little bunches of tulips you can get at the grocery stores. I'm an avid gardener and most my flowers come from my yard.

  • No, only if people are coming over for dinner or holiday. I'm cheap and think it's a waste of money. I don't want DH to buy me flowers either.
  • I never see flowers for $2.  Our kitchen table right now is a mess of mail and baby treats.  When I am over morning sickness, we will have flowers sometimes.  I used to do it when I lived on my own, but our family hasn't gotten it together much lately.
  • After this past month, when the cat ruined our kitchen table by knocking over my vase of birthday flowers, I have decided that there will be no more flowers in my home until these animals die. Which will probably be another 10+ years. :(

  • Nope. I've never seen a decent looking bunch in the store for less than $10, and for my $10 I'd rather buy a weekly bottle of wine. And I do.

  • DH brings me flowers every Friday. He started the tradition about a year ago. He doesn't spend a lot each time, but it is such a sweet gesture and they always look sweet in our dining room on the sideboard.

I was just thinking this.  I don't have a cat now, but growing up, ours only liked to drink water as it poured/dripped out of something, so we never had them.  Now DH claims they make him sneeze....

I almost always have a fresh bouquet of flowers in the spring and summer. My grandmother has a beautiful garden and is always cutting some for me. I rarely do in the winter but will buy a cheaper bouquet from time to time. DH buys me flowers just because or for my birthday but not for Valentine's day. They're usually double and triple their regular price and I'd rather just have other things :)

  • Flowers and plants belong outside, not in my house. I'm so not a flower person.

  • DH buys me "just because" flowers every so often, and that's pretty much the only time we have flowers in the house. I do enjoy having them, but never really think to buy them on my own.

  • Me, too, I love flowers and actually buy them almost every week (Trader Joe's has THE BEST flowers!).

I buy them any time I visit a friend at their home as well. :)
