Nervous about laying baby back down

So baby and I were just (trying) to get back to sleep, when she vomited all over me, her, the bed...pretty much everywhere. Now we are up and watching tv, I just fed her again a little and she's sleeping on my chest. I'm going to keep her upright for a half hour, but I'm nervous about laying her back down flat in her bassinet. Kinda like your drunk friend in college...I don't want her to aspirate her own vomit. But I can't exactly lay her on her stomach, now can I? So now I'm Wondering, what should I do? Prop up the mattress in her bassinet so she's elevated? Put her in the swing? So confused....what would you ladies suggest/do yourselves

  • I would put her in the swing for a bit so she's elevated.

  • We used the swing a lot for DD1 for this same fear!  DD2 has slept on us while we are in the recliner most of the time.  She's a month old today and I'm just starting to get the nerve up to let her sleep on her back at night.  She does fine during the day, but I worry at night :-/
  • I was going to suggest her swing or bouncer. Ava likes the bouncer and I put her in it if the reflux is really bad and I need to pee when I'm holding her. Good luck!
  • Thanks for all the suggestions, ladies! I ended up putting her in the swing and she didn't vomit again anyway, right before @Babycaps diagram post. The only thing I don't get with the tilting of her head is, won't she just turn her head back or wherever she wants? So she may just move her head again once I put her that way. She flails all over that thing every night, I've seen her do it. (Obviously can't roll over yet, but she definitely moves her head all over town in there!)

  • We had something similar but it all got stuck up her nose and she couldn't breathe for a moment. We had to get the snot sucker to get her to breathe again!!!! Scary stuff. She now sleeps in a rock and play day and night. She does vomit a lot. Mostly with formula. We feed, sit her upright for 20 minutes, swaddle her then another 10 minutes upright then we put her down. So far, few vomits but no choking.

  • My ped said infants have a reflex to turn neck when spitting up. I have watched my son spit up while on back in bassinet and it's true the spit up always runs down side of cheek and he doesn't at all seem disturbed as I am freaking out trying to get him up! Plus research shows the safest place no matter what is flat on back. So even with no spitting up, sleeping in a swing or other things is actually more dangerous in general. It is nerve racking though. But what helps me to try to sleep without staring wide eyed at him all night is knowing that I did all of the safest "research" based methods available and then when I'm still nervous I pray about it.

(That's what I would do). Apparently they cannot choke on their own vomit, but i understand the fear!

Just remember to switch up the side their head is turned to. We were forgetting to do that and he's a little flat headed on one side. Easily correctable but easier to avoid!
