Baby Names

Do I even want to know?

So we named DD Mya. LOVED the name then, LOVE the name now. Problem...people see Mya and think it's pronounced Mia (Me-uh) or people who know she's Mya (my-uh) spell her name Mia. Two different names...

We didn't like Maya because to us it looks like it would sound May-uh

Were we super dumb or are people idiots?!?  Basically just trying to get a general consensus, if you saw MYA, how would you pronounce it?

Our thought process exactly. You wouldn't believe how many people pronounce it mee-uh though.

  • My daughter's name is Mia and we had handfuls of people pronounce her name My-uh or ask us how to pronounce it. I was confused at first but it seems to have stopped.

I would definitely pronounce your DD's name as my-uh!

    Same here.
  • I don't think you're crazy for spelling it that way, I would definitely think My-uh. The simplest names are often mispronounced...try not to let it bother you.

People butcher the simplest names. I wouldn't read too much into it.

  • I would pronounce Mya (my spell check keeps changing it to May)as My-ah but I prefer the spelling Maya (which my spellcheck also likes cuz it didn't try to change it at all)

When I saw it, I said "My-uh" in my head and wondered why you spelled it that way.  Not sure if people actually pronounce Maya as May-uh, but it's the more accepted spelling for My-uh.

With the popularity of random Ys in names these days, I'm not surprised that some people assume Mya was supposed to be Mia with kreatyve spelling.

  • To me, Mya is clearly My-uh.

When I meet a Mia though, I am never sure if it's My-uh or Mee-uh.

  • I'm familiar with Mia and Maya. Mya not so much, but I probably would have guessed My-uh. However I do think that Maya would have been just fine and I do prefer that spelling.
