Anyone Do Multiple Let-downs on Pump?

Does it work? I try about 10 minutes in pushing the let-down  button and don't notice another let-down by doing that. However, sometimes about 3 minutes before I'm done pumping suddenly a bunch of milk starts coming out. Don't know if this hormone related as I'm more relaxed towards end or what that is. Overall, I'm wondering if trying more let-downs will help boost my supply while pumping at work?

Re: Anyone Do Multiple Let-downs on Pump?

  • I pump for 20 min and get 3-4 letdowns without pushing the letdown button more than once. How long do you pump for? Might need to up how much time.

  • I never push it and get 3-4 let downs per 15-20 min session.

I pump 20 minutes. I feel like I'm just running dry towards the end.

15-20 minutes. How are your settings on your pump? As in, how high are you setting it? You might want to play around with the strength, as well.
I have the Medela and I set the strength of the suction to the mid-point and sometimes tip it over a bit, but it starts to hurt which I know isn't good if I start feeling pain. I try to play around with it a bit, but I don't know if I see any clear pattern.

  • Have you tried having a picture of LO handy? I always get more letdowns if I have a picture or watch a video of babe. Re pressing the letdown button more than once: yes, some days I have to if I feel like I'm still full. After I pump, I hand express for a couple minutes or until nothing else comes out, also.
I try to look at photos, but I guess I don't buy that it works but you think it does, eh? I'd be willing to give it a try. I'm trying to pump while I work so that I'm not taking too many breaks. The more breaks I take the longer I have to stay at work and the race against time to get to daycare. Oh, the joys of parenting!

  • The photo trick never did anything for me, but I usually switched back to the let down phase after 10 minutes, and continue to pump until a. 2nd let down, which may take 5-15 more minutes.

My setting is medium-low. Some days I bump it up if I'm not letting down like usual.
  • Re photos: I have a stressful job, and I've found looking at pictures of baby and videos puts me in a happy place. So maybe it's not so much the actual picture, but rather the loosening up, YKWIM?
Call me crazy but I really love the breastfeeding board on The Bump and I think when I'm at work and want to relax I just get lost on the message boards and I produce more!? Hehe...

  • I always had three let downs when pumping: within the first minute, at about the 10-12 minute point, and at about 17 minutes. My pump did not have a let down setting. I did have it set to the highest suction (it was not uncomfortable at all - you're right that you shouldn't be in pain when pumping).
